Sub-Honours
At Sub-Honours level the School aims to cover the general ancient history of the Mediterranean world, with the main emphasis being on Greek and Roman civilisation. Sub-Honours Ancient History (AN) modules tend to consist of three lectures and one tutorial each week, with assessment being divided between two essays and an exam. The exam will usually contain essays and gobbets (brief commentaries on short extracts of text or images). Normally a student will have to have taken all four Sub-Honours AN modules to progress to a degree in Ancient History.
Honours
There are normally at least three AN modules offered each semester at Honours level. In the first semester of third year there is a compulsory module called 'Approaches to Ancient History', but aside from this third and fourth year students study together. Ancient History can be taken with various other subjects as part of a joint degree. The School of Classics also offers a degree in Ancient History and Archaeology, which gives students priority on modules with a high archaeological content.
