The two long stretches of sand protecting St Andrews from the sea are known as West and East Sands for geographically creative reasons. Either make a pretty setting for a refreshing walk; a trip to East Sands could also include the harbour and pier or the cliff top path which continues down the coast of Fife. Periodic attractions include shivering surfers, washed up ship cargo and creatures ripped from the depths during east coast storms. Between the two the tiny Castle Sands still features the remnants of its outdoor swimming pool, although most student visitors head down there for bonfires or the May Morning Dip.
