Botanical Gardens
From sinner
St Andrews Botanic Garden advertises itself as the 'hidden gem' of Scotland, and hidden it seems to be, although it's only around ten minutes' walk from the centre of town (there's a map on the website).
Around 8000 species of ferns, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees are grown in the garden, both native and international. Much of the garden consists of outdoor plants, but there are various glasshouses and plastic tunnels for the more exotic species.
The garden is both an enjoyable tourist attraction and a centre for teaching and research. A children's club is held on the second Saturday of very month, and garden walks, workshops, plant sales and a lecture series are held for the public throughout the year. The next open day is on 23rd November 2008 from 10.30am-3.30pm, and will include nature and conservation activities, craft activities and food and music.
