Brian Lang is the current Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University. He took office in January 2001, following the retiral of Struther Arnott.
His contract was originally due to expire in December 2006; it was however extended until December 2008. His successor is Louise Richardson, the current Executive Dean of the Radcliffe Institute of Harvard, whose contract begins on January 1 2009.
He has recently been appointed Chair of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra; he is also Deputy Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, his hometown.
