Chancellor
From sinner
The Chancellor is the titular figurehead of the entire University, elected by the General Council to hold the position for life. The Chancellor's main responsibility is to confer degrees on graduating students, and to act as a prominent symbol and representative of the University.
The current Chancellor is Sir Menzies Campbell, local Member of Parliament and former head of the Liberal Democrat Party, who took office on January 21 2006. His predecessor was Sir Kenneth Dover, a leading academic, who had been in the position since 1981 - and was the first Chancellor not to die in office for almost two centuries.
The Chancellor usually appoints a Vice-Chancellor, who can confer degrees in his absence; since 1859, this has conventionally been the University Principal.
