Sub-Honours
Classical Studies is the study of ancient Greek and Roman culture predominantly through ancient texts. These are always studied in translation (Classics is the name of the degree for people who wish to study texts in their original Latin or Greek). At Sub-Honours level Classical Studies (CL) modules tend to consist of three lectures and one tutorial each week, with assessment being divided between two essays and an exam. Normally a student will have to have taken all four Sub-Honours CL modules to progress to a degree in Classical Studies.
Honours
There are normally several CL modules offered each semester at Honours level, as Classical Studies is very popular. However, at Honours level the CL simply indicates a School of Classics module studied in translation, and as such the modules are also open to Classics and Ancient History students. Third and fourth year students study together.
