Introduction

Located about half way down the scores next to Butts Wynd, the dept. of Modern History is a pretty nice building with some pretty nice people in it. The largest of the three history departments, it contains a pretty well stocked library on the ground floor, some very helpful secretaries in the basement, some reasonable loos and the vast majority of the offices of modern history tutors.

Library - straight in front of you as you walk in. It contains all the texts (but not journals) you need to to write your essays in first, second and probably third year, so dont bother buying any unless you really love the subject. The librarian is around most days either in the morning or the afternoon and you cant get books out of the cabinet without her! She is a bit of a stickler for the rules so dont start eating, drinking, letting your phone ring etc unless you want to be made to feel about 3 inches tall....There is also a bank of about 12 flat-screen pc's in there which do get busy at times but can be incredibly useful for last minute printing of essays when the library ones in the playpen are rammed! If you do modern history for 4 years you will end up getting to know everyone in the place by face if not by name, which i found very helpful as you seem to know everyone in your final tutorials even if you havnt been introduced!

The Dept. Office - go in the front door, turn right straight away through the glass door and head downstairs. The secretaries are really helpful and will do just about anything that you ask of them as long as its not too late in the day and you're not asking them to move the earth - they even printed one of my essays out for me in second year and lent me the a couple of quid in 4th year so i could get my dissertation bound before the deadline!

There are a number of tutorial rooms dotted around the building, but some of the tutors prefer to have them in their offices if they are big enough. An awesome place to spend 4 years if you're into your history - just make sure you do at least one course with prof. Bentley - he's the modern history equivalent of mediaeval's prof. Bartlett! LEGENDS.
