By train
From Leuchars Railway Station trains to Dundee cost about £4.10 single (£4.60 return) or £2.70 (£3.05) if you have a Young Persons Railcard. The journey is about 15 minutes. Check online or call National Rail Enquiries for train times.
By taxi
There are many taxi services in St Andrews so the average fare to Dundee will vary, expect it to be about £25-30 and take 20-25 minutes. Consider sharing the journey with someone else.
By car
If you have a car with you at uni, then Dundee is very easy to get to - shopping trips with flatmates to one of the large supermarkets in Dundee can be quite practical with a car. Just follow the A91 out of town, take the second exit at the Guardbridge roundabout, and follow the road through to the roundabout with the A92, where you head north over the Tay Road Bridge. Parking in the centre of town can be a bit of a pain and/or expensive, though.
Note that there are now no tolls on the Tay Road Bridge in either direction.

By car
Again, if you have a car, then Edinburgh is only an hour and a half away from St Andrews, and can be more convenient than the train or bus depending on where you are heading. Be aware though that the present roadworks for the new trams have made driving in the city centre even more of a nightmare than it was before, and as with any major city, parking can be difficult to find - if your destination is the city centre, then it may be better to drive to Leuchars and catch the train after all!
There are several routes to Edinburgh from St Andrews, but the simplest and usually quickest (unless you get stuck behind a tractor!) is probably just to follow the A91 out of St Andrews, through Cupar and several other villages, and onto the M90, then follow the motorway south. Carry on along the A90 over the Forth Road Bridge into the city, or take the M9 to the City Bypass.
Note that there are now no tolls on the Forth Road Bridge in either direction.
