First Year

In first year students are split into two streams. Those who have already studied Ancient Greek (to A Level or equivalent) are placed in the advanced modules to build on their current knowledge of language and literature. Those who have little or no experience of Ancient Greek are placed in the beginner modules. The first semester module is a lightning-fast study of Ancient Greek grammar. In second semester students tackle their first full length Greek text.

Second Year

In second year beginner and advanced students study alongside one another. Teaching is literature based with weekly language classes to consolidate grammatical knowledge. Assessment is set according to ability, which usually means that ex-beginners must translate fewer lines of text.

Honours Level

At Honours level all students are assumed to be on an equal footing. Usually two Greek modules are offered each semester. Grading tends to be split evenly between coursework (usually two essays; some module co-ordinators include assessed presentations) and exam (often including set text translation, unseen text translation, commentary and/or essays). Single Honours student must write a dissertation. Classics (Greek and Latin) students must take a minimum of three modules in one language and two in the other; a dissertation is optional.
