Haunted?

When the moon is high, and the wind is howling, the cathedral and castle may seem like the perfect setting for a gothic horror novel. Or perhaps you've been wondering if Andrew Melville Hall was designed by a mad scientist, who wanted to loose some eldritch creature from beyond on to an unsuspecting populace. It may have crossed your mind to ask, "Is St Andrews Haunted?" and if it hasn't, well, it must have by now, since you are reading this page.Well, look no further. The answers (yes, plural) can be found here.

Question: Is St Andrews Haunted?

Short Answer

No. At least...we don't think so. At least many of us don't think so. Really.

Long Answer

History and ghost stories go here.

The cathedral cemetery is a pleasant place during the day.

If you're into ghosts, we've got ghosts for you! Whether it is the strange presence sometimes felt at the Castle Sands or more famous ghosts, such as that of Cardinal Beaton, there is no shortage of the supernatural.

There is the phantom coach of James Sharp, the assassinated Archbishop of St Andrews, which, with its four, huge black horses, can still be seen travelling in deathly silence along the Strathkinness road. Or there is the ghost of the murdered Prior who can still be seen looking over St Rule's Tower. Or the spectral monk who lures the unwary into the hidden tunnels and staircases under the ruined cathedral.

However, perhaps the most famous ghost is that of the "White Lady" who, on dark and stormy nights, can be seen doing her ghostly thing by the square tower in the priory wall. It is believed that she is the ghost of a noblewoman whose mysteriously well-preserved body, dressed all in white, was found when the tower was broken open. Subsequent investigations were hampered by the fact that the body disappeared! Those are the most famous and best recorded ghostly sightings in St Andrews. Stories of a malevolent spirit that prowls the Students' Union are, as yet, unconfirmed. But watch your drink, anyway.

Other

I'm sure there are some books on the subject. And at least one novel.
