The Principal is the most senior role in the entire structure of the University. He or she is the 'chief executive officer' of the University, responsible for the smooth running of the entire organisation, presiding over meetings of the Senatus Academicus, and conferring degrees in their capacity as Vice-Chancellor in the absence of the Chancellor himself.
The position of Principal is currently occupied by Dr Brian Lang, who has been in the post since January 2001. He is retiring in December 2008, to be succeeded by Dr Louise Richardson, the current Executive Dean of the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard.
The Principal has a suite of vice and deputy Principals, who together comprise the 'Office of the Principal', based at College Gate on North Street. The current Deputy Principal is Prof. Keith Brown; the Vice Principals are as follows:
- Vice Principal (External Relations) - Steve Magee
- Vice Principal (Governance and Planning) - Prof. Ron Piper
- Vice Principal (Learning and Teaching) - Prof. Phil Winn
- Vice Principal (Research) - Prof. Alan Miller
The other members of the Office of the Principal are the Proctor & Provost of St Leonard's College, currently Prof. Christopher Smith, and the Quaestor & Factor, currently Derek Watson.
