Project Anime, the University of St Andrews Anime & Manga society, aims to promote both of these written and visual art forms that hail from Japan. With the recent successes of films like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, as well as the broad popularity of serials such as Pokémon (we tend not to talk too much about that) the profile of anime in the West has never been better. Whether you've never seen anime before or are a veritable Otaku, Project Anime aims to show a whole range of anime from the serious to the tragic to the (sometimes unintentionally) comedic. Come along on Mondays at 8PM in the Salad Bowl and see for yourself!

The Project Anime Committee can be contacted at animesocmail@st-andrews.ac.uk. Contact details for specific Committee Members can be found below.

What We Do

Essentially the society provides a place for anime & manga fans to meet up and watch anime. The society meets every Monday during termtime at 8PM in the Salad Bowl (top floor of the Union) to do this. At meetings we typically watch four to five episodes of two series of anime, with a break in between for pub and Tesco runs. We watch anime with English subtitles to preserve the original voice acting and avoid the horrific cuts that sadly befalls much anime that reaches our shores (Cardcaptor Sakura being a notable example).

In addition we hold other social events, including a number of cosplay pubcrawls each semester, where members are encouraged to come dressed in costume as anime or Japanese video game characters - previous themes have included Villains and Power Duos & Teams. There is also a yearly bake sale.

So far this academic year (2008-09) we have watched Noein, Azumanga Daioh, Gunslinger Girl, Metropolis, Tokyo Godfathers, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Howl's Moving Castle, among others.

For those curious about the society's name, it is named after an anime called Project A-Ko based on a uber-strong girl who is the lovechild of Superman and Wonderwoman. Why exactly this was chosen as a basis for a society name is forever lost to history, and probably for the better.

Membership

Membership costs a paltry £2 for the academic year and is open to all students. Membership entitles you to free renting priveleges from the Project Anime library. Plus, the more money we have the more fantastic anime & manga we can buy for the library!
