Introduction

St Andrews Learning and Teaching Innovation, Review and Enhancement was blatantly named to fit the suitably Scottish acronym SALTIRE. SALTIRE offers students help and support with learning and study. Students who approach Student Support Services with general academic issues will often be referred here.

Help for students

SALTIRE offers help and advice in a number of academic areas. They run Study Skills courses and are also available for one-on-one consultation to advise on, for example, scheduling, note-taking, academic writing, essay structure and presentations. The Maths Support Centre is to help those who do not have an especially good grasp of mathematics, something not understood by the many students who turn down SALTIRE literature in Orientation Week with, 'Oh, I don't study Maths'.

Essay Competition

SALTIRE runs an annual essay competition with a total prize pot of £1000. Students are asked to submit a piece of writing of up to 1000 words reflecting on their learning experience at St Andrews. The competition is moderately advertised but not especially popular, which is surprising considering the potential financial reward for a relatively easy piece of work.
