Introduction

The School of Classics at St Andrews is one of the largest and most vibrant Classics departments in the UK, with around 25 members of permanent and visiting staff. For the study of Classics and Ancient History, the department at St Andrews is ranked seventh in the UK in The Times Good University Guide 2009, fourth in The Guardian University Guide 2009 and sixth in The Independent Good University Guide 2009. It is ranked best in Scotland in each guide, and has been awarded a 5 rating (5* being the highest grade) in the last three Research Assessment Exercises.

History

St Andrews has been a centre for the study of the Classical world since the university's foundation in 1413. It continues to build on its reputation for teaching and research. The School is currently situated in the Swallowgate building in the centre of town.

Organisation

The head of the School is Professor Gregory Woolf, who has been at the university since 1998. Teaching and research is carried out by permanent members staff and the Leverhulme Research Fellows, of which there are currently three. A small number of support staff is responsible for the administration of the School, including the School office and School library.

The two room library mainly holds additional copies of books already found in the main library, but has some unique works. It also has its own short loan section, into which members of staff will sometimes place personal copies of useful texts. The library is accessible during term time only.

Swallowgate itself has several teaching rooms and an Archaeology Room. Teaching is usually held in the School or in the New Arts Building. There is also a computer room on the ground floor of Swallowgate managed by IT Services.

Degree Programmes

The School offers five main undergraduate degree programmes: Ancient History, Classics, Greek, Latin and Classical Studies. Classics includes the study of ancient texts in their original languages, and so both Greek and Latin are required. In Classical Studies all texts are studied in translation.

At Sub-Honours level modules are offered in Ancient History, Classical Studies, Latin (beginner or advanced) and Greek (beginner or advanced). In the case of languages, each module will be a prerequisite for the next module. Usually a student will have to take all four Sub-Honours modules to progress to a degree in that subject.

The Honours programme offers flexibility with preference towards students' degrees; for example, a Classics student can take any module in the school, but will have priority for Latin and Greek courses and less chance of taking a popular Ancient History module. This system allows a number of joint degrees, such as Latin and Ancient History or Ancient History and Archaeology (not offered separately).

Research Institutes

The School currently runs two large research projects, 'After Augustine' and 'Science and Empire in the Roman World'. These are funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

The next conference organised by the School is 'Classics and Robert Graves: a relationship in literature, translation and adaptation'. Four research workshops will be held throughout 2009.

Research Seminars are held every Friday afternoon in Swallowgate. These are attended by members of staff, postgraduate students and occasionally undergraduates. Invited scholars from all over the world present their topics, which are followed by questions and discussion.
