Introduction
We play table tennis! Yes table tennis is a real sport (have you watched the Olympics?)
Aims
The club aims to facilitate the playing of table tennis at the university. Whilst we do enter a mens team into the BUCS Scottish Conference the emphasis is primarily on playing table tennis as a recreational rather than competitive activity and players of all abilities are welcome to attend our sessions. That said we are always on the look out for talented players to help us in our annual quest to beat Edinburgh! If you enjoy playing the sport come along to one of our sessions, there's bound to be someone of a similar ability.
Committee Members
The 2008-2009 committee consists of:
President Rory Coulter
Treasurer Mat Chantry
Secretary Alex Hayes
Safety Officer/Equipment Officer/Banter merchant Chris Howard
Practice Times
Currently the club practices weekly at 8pm on Tuesdays in the Activities Room in the Sports Centre (ask at the desk if you dont know where it is). Practice runs until 10.30pm, but as two and a half hours of solid table tennis would test anyone's endurance we often knock off early (but not too early otherwise we get fined!). Extra sessions will occasionally be put on during the BUCS season.
Social Meetups
The club has no official social meeting times. Meetups generally happen spontaneously after practices or matches. The Table Tennis AGM (usually held in April) is pretty much the only scheduled social event. The AGM is usually held at a restaurant and hopefully this year we will achieve quorum and get at least 8 members down!
Society Strengths
The table tennis club's main strength is its inclusiveness and the club caters well for players of all abilities. The 'drop in and out' nature of practices make it convenient for non serious players and at £5 for the year, membership is a bargain (much better value than 'proper' tennis!) Until you've taken part in one of our weekly games of 'Round the table' with Big Chris you haven't truly experienced St Andrews!
Areas to Improve
The club's relations with the powers that be at the AU have traditionally been a touch 'frosty' for many reasons, ranging from difficulties contacting the committee to members traipsing grass onto the hallowed floors of the Activities Room and leaving the club's locker unlocked and hanging open. However it must be stressed that these problems are largely a thing of the past and hopefully we are no longer the 'joke club' of St Andrews! We could also do with investing in some new equipment (although this is now underway). One of the committee's main priorities this year is bringing members in lower years into the management of the club to promote its long term stability.
