To be found at 77 Market Street, The Central is one of the more quiet pubs in St Andrews and tends to be visited by a slightly older clientèle. One of the main features is the bar, which is situated in the centre of the room and has given the pub its name. The walls are decorated with a combination of mirrors advertising various drinks and old photographs tracing the history of the pub, and with large windows that allow the establishment to be light and airy in the daytime.
Low tables are surrounded with a combination of benches and stools, which means there is not much room to move around the pub, but also lets you squeeze more people onto the tables. As ever, this can be a godsend on a Friday night, but it can be quite a crush. The prices in The Central are comparable to other places in St Andrews; a pint is about £2.70, but a pint of Coke is an exorbitant £1.50. In The Central it pays to be a drinker. As ever, Scottish beers are served, but there is Kronenbourg, Guinness and John Smith's on tap, as well as a selection of bottled drinks. There tends to be a promotion on every week, especially during the football season and the Six Nations. Food here tends to be on the good side of average, and tends to have a wider selection than some other pubs in the town. Prices are similar to other pubs, but you do get good value for money and there is always a specials board.
As has been mentioned there is regular sport on the televisions, and these are usually showing sport throughout the day too. A special mention has to go to the jukebox; it is by far the best in St Andrews, crammed fun of lovely stuff such as The Kinks and The Clash and other noisy and excitable bands. There are some flashes of mediocrity (The Corrs, anyone?) but on the whole the only thing that is keeping me from stealing it is that I can't find a crowbar big enough.
