Several St Andrews pubs have undergone a name change in the last few years. The Four Woods became Broons which became Howie's which is now McKays, the Firkin turned into The Raisin, Ogston's transformed into the Gin House which is now known as The Rule but what used to be called The Lizard is now Ogston's, and what was once McSorley's is now 1 Golf Place.

The latest change in name - and image - has occurred here, at The Clubhouse Bar, which was until recently known as 'TPs'.

The Clubhouse is the bar of the Pilmour Hotel, one of the smallest hotels in St Andrews, located on Pilmour Place at the western end of North Street. This location means it gets quite a few golfers popping in for a drink, but it's also very handy for two halls of residence - McIntosh and John Burnet - and for the centre of town in general. The bar is particularly popular with residents of John Burnet.

The changes made to the bar by the new management consist mainly of a change in décor, but there have also been some improvements to the menu. The new décor features a large selection of black and white photographs, which cover most of the walls. These feature golfing and other local scenes, and are actually quite interesting - they're good quality pictures and it looks like a bit more thought than usual has gone into them. It's certainly an improvement on the rather bland look TP's had before.

The range of drinks on offer at the Clubhouse is about average. The selection of five keg beers includes Budweiser Budvar, which I haven't seen on tap in St Andrews before. The beer prices range from £2.20 to £2.50 a pint, which isn't extortionate but isn't the cheapest in town either. Spirits are better value at £1.80 for a large 35ml measure. There are no real ale pumps, which is always a shame in my opinion, although the selection of bottled beers is reasonable. The menu has been improved and there's now quite a good selection ranging from the soup and beefburgers which are staples of pub grub all over the country, to better-quality fare including steak, salmon and a few more interesting dishes.

Entertainment-wise there's a widescreen TV showing sporting events, although unfortunately the place is a bit too small to merit a pool table. Occasional live music is promised following the popularity of the live music on re-opening night, so watch the blackboards outside for details.

My overall impression is that, with the recent changes, The Clubhouse is a decent little pub, ideally placed if you live in John Burnet, McIntosh or the town centre. It's quiet enough during the day to have a quiet, relaxing drink, and busy enough in the evenings to have a good atmosphere.
