Introduction
Conveniently located next to the 'all night garage' just off South Street, the Whey Pat Tavern is often missed by students on their way to KFB. However, their Long Vodkas are something that shouldn't be passed by.
The staff are friendly and welcoming, and make an effort to get to know the regulars. The customers are a variety of students, lecturers and locals, although the students often gather in the comfortable back room. The walls of this room are borrowed by the pinboards of student groups supported by the Whey Pat; the Aikido, Fencing and Sub-Aqua clubs, and the Mountaineering Society. The student groups are generally found drinking at the table beneath their pinboard, on particular days of the week. This room is also the chosen venue for meetings of many other student societies.
On Wednesday nights the Whey Pat is taken over by a dominoes competition. This is a favourite with regulars, locals and students alike. Prizes up for grabs are a large steak pie each for first and second place and also some beers. The competition is taken very seriously by some of the older locals but new players are always welcomed with open arms (and closed hands).
On a Thursday night, the Whey Pat hosts a pub quiz. Prizes range from a bottle of wine to a keg of beer, and there is a 'cashpot' to be won too. Again, this attracts a wide range of people. The down side is that with regular teams, the Whey Pat pub quiz can be very competitive.
Unfortunately the infamous Whey Pat Ale Festivals have been banned under new licensing laws. The staff are currently trying to find a way around this so keep asking back for updated information!
Prices aren't low in comparison with the union, but are certainly very reasonable compared to many other pubs in St Andrews. The variety of drinks is wide, particularly beers on draught, as the Whey Pat caters for a male dominated older generation, in the absence of students. Don't head off to this pub if you're looking for cocktails or umbrellas in your drink, but it does have a range of spirits, including good quality flavoured vodka. The Whey Pat has four Real Ale pumps, one being permanently Greene King IPA and the other three being a variety Guest Ales from around Britain (although Deuchars IPA makes a regular appearence). There's always something new to try. There's also a range of over 30 Malt Whiskies at very competitive prices.
The Whey Pat is well known for its large bowls of nachos and its gigantic triple decker sandwiches, all lovingly crafted in the kitchen by Jacqui. Also available are a range of baked potatoes, salads and paninis. Feel free to add extra cheese or Jalapenos to anything on the menu. Feeling daring? Try Jacqui's homemade spicy beef chilli!
The Whey Pat Tavern is not the most trendy pub in St Andrews, but it does boast a relaxed atmosphere. The locals and students get on well, and a game of darts is a way of breaking the ice between the two groups of people. The Whey Pat darts team are more than willing to give out a few tips and advice, and it's a good way of making friends.
If you're looking for a laid back pub crawl, I suggest you start at the Whey Pat, and go via Drouthy's to The Cellar.
