Introduction

The University of St Andrews Union Debating Society is the oldest and, some might say, the finest debating society of its kind in the world. Descending from the Literary Society (established 1794), the Society's motto is Pro Amicita et Literis ("For Friendship and Learning"), and in this spirit it aims to provide a forum for free speech for students and friends of the university, whilst also offering training in various forms of speech and debating, recruiting and sending teams to competitions held across the globe and making a strong contribution to the community in part through its involvement in running schools competitions.

In the Students' Association, the Society enjoys the status of a subcommittee of the Student Services Committee, therefore all members of the Association are automatically members and need pay no fees - indeed the society prides itself in offering all of its events, save those with specific costs such as meals, free of any entry charge.
