Macbook Going Slow

I have had my macbook for nearly a year and recently it has started to take a long time to start up (about 10mins compared to about 1min a few weeks ago).

i have also noticed that my internet is going slower - the blasted beachball appears rather a lot! this seems to slow down itunes, word etc. things that were fine until recently.

i have plenty of memory left and am still running the same specs as when i bought it (pretty sure it is os x tiger)

any ideas on how to speed it up?? or is it gonna continue like this/get slower?

thanks

Take a look in System Preferences->Your account->Login Items.

If you install a lot of stuff it will put things in here you perhaps don't use anymore...

thats it though, the only thngs i have installed are microsoft office for mac and football manager 2008. which to be fair are not that hefty and which i installed pretty much as soon as i got it.

this go slow just sort of happened, there was no gradual build up. one day it was fine the next it was being a little bitch.

i checked the login items and there is noting untoward there - just itunes.

any other ideas?

thanks

Could be a virus, you have protection?

Could be the HDD. When I accidentally put stress on my old laptops one it slowed right down (2 hour boot once!). I did that by picking it up by the edge whilst flat just as well.

A few tips that may or may not help. Also if it is possible can you remember what you were doing with you laptop around the time you noticed it getting slow.

Make sure that you have emptied your "waste basket", a few years ago a friend of a friend noticed the same problem as you and it turn out, they thought that by dragging items to the "waste basket" it would automatically deleted them. Obviously that is not true.

What ever your browser is make sure that the history has been deleted every once in a while.

Mostly macs should be fine, but if the worst comes to the worst you can also just reinstall the OS using the disks that came with your laptop, JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF ALL YOUR PERSONAL FILES.

As for Anti virus, generally macs don't need anti virus software, but it doesn't mean that they are invulnerable. ClamAV is one anti virus that a friend of mine pointed me to ages ago. Never used it, but it is one of the few free ones for Mac OS X out there.
