What's the best restaurant in St Andrews?

What's the best restaurant in St Andrews and why? I've eaten in a lot of the places and I'm trying to pick the best for an academic family dinner of ten. What's your suggestions sinner?

10 people for an academic familly; i'd suggest the grill house. Ziggy's would be good too. Also check the Byre's menu, its quite good.

They'd be the only decent places I'd suggest for 10 people. Obviously there are better places but 10 people is too many for them really.

Can the Doll's House not seat ten upstairs? Is the Doll's House still open?

More than likely and yes. The service there is excellent.

The last time that we went to the Doll's House, on a quiet Sunday, with a party of three, they were completely disinterested in us and every member of staff ignored us to deal with a group that arrived after us.

We went to the Grill House

I hold an element of surprise

It is hard to argue with the grill house. The Balaka is also excellent,

Wait, sorry, did I misread the title? I thought it was meant to be best rather than most blandly average...

I read it as - "The best for a group of 10 people", which is a little different really.

My favourite for 2-4 people would be the Vine Leaf.

oo where's the vine leaf, out of interest. I've never heard of it.

Fair enough, for 10 might be a slightly different question, but there's few restaurants that'll refuse to take 10 people, so it only really applies if it's for 10 walking in off the street rather than booking.

I cannot understand the obsession with the Vine Leaf, it was always touted as the place to take parents etc. I found it cramped and dingy, the food was average at best, and the owner is so beyond smarmy it's painful.

Rufflet's just outside town would get my money any day - lovely atmosphere, superb food, great cellar, pleasantly attentive but pleasingly invisible staff and no more expensive than the Vine Leaf (which is grossly overpriced).

Ooh, Rufflets would get my vote too - we had our wedding reception there and it was superb. The staff were absolutely fantastic and food was great. Highly recommended!

There's quite definitely a mention of "academic family dinner of 10", not so much in the title, but certainly in the request for suggestions.

You're right though, most places will cater for a group of 10 if given plenty of notice.

I like the Oak Rooms, Jahangir, Nahm Jim and, if you're going pricey, No. 40 at the Golf Hotel, the restaurant in the Russell Hotel and the Road Hole Grill in the Old Course Hotel. Doubt the last one would be what you're looking for for the academic family though!

I second above suggestions, both do good food and will take that many people.

Not impressed with the Dolls House when I went there. Actually the best meal I've ever had in St Andrews was in Naahm Jimm's.

Seconding this. But that was years ago and I heard they've had a culinary staff overhaul to their detriment since. I've not paid close attention, but isn't that a Japanese restaurant there now? Anyone know what its like?

There's always the option of cooking for your family, at home

Rufflets is excellent - the restaurant is sublime but whether it's suitable for an academic dinner for 10 I'm not so sure.

I can't understand the obsession with the Vine Leaf either - I had fish there and it was so overcooked that I couldn't actually cut into it - it was like a solid bit of rubber.

L'Orient is really nice - but again I guess you have to make sure everyone likes Thai/Japanese food.

BUT I hear incredible things about the Russell Hotel too, so you are spoilt for choice.
