Unreg user clamp down

Operation Troll-B-Gone has come into force!

It might be me but I'm sure I've not seen these messages around the site before:

"You may need to log into the site in order to post on this thread"

"Sorry - registered users only. Please log in to post on this board"

and the delightfully blunt -
"As unregistered user scum, you must enter this security code below to post your worthless message. Your message will need to be checked by a SS moderator, so won't appear on the site immediately. Register. Now. Citizen"*

Are the days of the unregged over? Or can they just not start threads?

* Ok, this quote may have been edited

Good for most boards. Might kill the personals/I saw you boards a bit.

My facebook profile has always been linked with my sinner profile, so if I piss someone off enough they know where to find me. While I'm not suggesting that, it's good to see that some accountability has come into the system for lurkers and trolls.

Good show!

Please do a spot of research before jumping to conclusions.

Unregistered users can still post on some boards, including the freshers' board, the advice and personals boards.

In July of this year I shall be walking 78 miles in 6 days in aid of the Joseph Salmon Trust, a charity founded by my friends in memorial to their son Joseph who died aged 3 in April of 2005. Please look here for further details and consider sponsoring me. Thank you.

And what do you know? The Sinner's board as well. The very board where you posted the message.

Problems with spammers forced us to tighten the system a little, and besides - it's free to register an account with The Sinner, so perhaps more people should if they have a St Andrews account. The unregistered user system is intended for prospective students only.

So unregs can still post on the Sinner Main Board, the Personals and the Advice Please boards? That's not exactly a clampdown is it?

I think the original intention was to stop them posting here too, but the sinner's code was too shit to actually make that happen :P

The intention was probably to REDUCE the number of unregistered users posting, and to encourage more people to register, no?

I think the main intention was to reduce spamvertising.

To bring these measures in purely to stop cowardly anonymous shitstorm-provoking unreg posts would be a tad harsh in my view, seeing as a) it's an essential part of what makes the Sinner, the Sinner and b) I find watching the flaming from a safe distance mighty entertaining.

The reasons are two-fold:

1) Reduce the amount of spam that makes its way through the system (this seems to go in waves - occasionally there'll be well over 200 spam messages in a day)

2) Encourage more people to register, so that their messages get delivered to the site immediately, instead of having to be approved by a mod.

We found that moderators had so many unregistered messages to check that they didn't have enough time to properly read the messages, which resulted in lots of inappropriate and unnecessarily abusive posts being allowed through unintentionally.

By encouraging more people to post as registered users, the unregistered user system can be retained predominantly for the prospective students to ask questions (which is the sole reason why the boards aren't locked to the st-and.ac.uk domain).
