Re: Dissertation

The original post was deleted so I don't know what kerryflett actually offered but how does helping someone with their grammar break any rules on plagiarism?

Re: Ponyo

The sinner is fairly dead, not sure you'll get a reply from an active member of the society - you might be better trying the facebook group. In response to your question, have you tried calling up the nearest cinemas? Might be your best bet as there doesn't seem to be much advertised online about it...

Re: When is the best time to visit St. Andrews? and etc.

The buses are fairly good for travelling out of Fife if you just want to go to the major cities, plus Leuchars isn't that far away for the train line. It's probably worth considering how much you plan to travel around and weigh that against the costs of owning and running a car because you don't rea...

Re: Job Decisions

I've heard good things about the JET programme but application process starts September so you wouldn't be able to do it this year and you do have to be quite interested in Japanese culture. Personally, I would stick with the teaching - if you're making enough money you might as well get the qualifi...

Re: Time to think about those careers you slackers!

The application form this year for the clinical psychology doctoral courses included the question: What do you hope to gain from training?
The temptation to put 'a doctorate in clinical psychology would be nice' was hard to resist, but I succeeded :)

Re: A tax on grief? Can we change this?

But my point was that by the actual definition of 'acronym' none of your examples are acronyms because they aren't pronounced as words, like scuba or radar or laser. It's not that I'm trying to call an acronym by another name :P

Re: A tax on grief? Can we change this?

I think exnihilo is making a distinction between an acronym and an initialism - in the strictist sense an acronym is an abbreviation of initial letters that forms a word of its own, such as radar, whereas an initialism would be where you take the first letters and spell them out when you say them, s...

Re: Info About St. Andrews for a Study Abroad student!

DRA has a tv in each room but unless the uni have grown generous with the start of the recession, there aren't any tvs in Fife park or Albany. Hell, Fife park flats don't even have living rooms in which to put a tv. It does add to its charm though, I'll be sad to see the place go.

Re: Union entry for non-students?

I just went to the general office, gave them money and a photo, showed my matric card and they gave me a life membership. They're shoddy things anyway - if i'm paying £10 you'd think the least they could do is print off a real card that doesn't look like i put it together at home :P

Re: How Long

It doesn't really matter that much - if you really care about going in late, leave the first ten mins early and then you can be a few mins late for the start of the next. No one wil notice you sneaking in or out of physics if you go in the door upstairs, assuming you're in lecture theatre A. Or, jus...

Re: Let them eat cake

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/YourHome/HousingBenefit/LocalHousingAllowance/ Fife council's website is notoriously useless for providing information about these things, or sometimes it's there and just really hard to find, but what the Glasgow site says is true of all council areas, the onl...

Re: Let them eat cake

I don't have much to contribute, just wanted to say about housing benefit - it's calculated based on an average of rent in your area. If you happen to be paying less than that you do end up getting a bit more money than you actually pay per month though there is a limit on that - i think maybe £15 a...

Re: Best bank account?

Perhaps I'm just remembering incorrectly, but i'm sure that last year getting a bus to glasgow with a student card cost me the same as it did without one, even though the driver nicely gave me a ticket that said student on it :P (I think it was £10.50)

Re: Computers

If you're not a computer geek like half of the sinner are, have a look at http://www.dell.co.uk - they're affordable and pretty reliable. I got both my desktop and my laptop from them. Had a problem with the hard drive of the desktop a few months after buying it, they sent someone out for free to re...

Re: What modules should I do this year?

I wouldn't say that - I didn't even take biology in school and I managed fine. The staff tend to be pretty good at helping you out if you get too confused anyway. I always found that the good thing about psych was that it was pretty balanced in terms of arts and science related topics - everyone had...

Re: What modules should I do this year?

The psychology of language and psycholinguistics are really interesting topics but unfortunately, unless it's changed recently, they aren't covered in first year. There may be some of it in the developmental psych part of the course but it'd be rather basic. I actually did my third year review essay...

Re: Grad ball ticket exchange

It better be okay for someone else to take my ticket since those hours are right in the middle of the ordinary working day - and I can't imagine I'm the only person going to the ball who works. There are probably a few people not heading up for the ball until Friday as well, as my friend is. Got to ...

Re: thesis binding in the gold letter/black book thing

Try just asking in reprographics or the general office? I highly doubt they do it themselves but they might be able to point you in the right direction.
