Cover letters should on the whole be written formally. If you know the person's name, start with "Dear Mr/Mrs Whoever" and end "Yours sincerely". If you don't know their name start with "Dear Sir/Madam" and end "Yours faithfully". As a rule I write my covering letters along these lines: 1st paragrap...
