George Orwell, 1984 and Animal Farm are 'must read' classics. Neil Gaimans American Gods and Neverwhere are fantastic! Micheal Swanwicks The Iron Dragons Daughter is an amazing book, but being out of print is imposible to get a copy of :( as for childrens books The Cronicals of Narnia are the best!
