I doubt the average undergraduate today would even have a clue what Usenet is / was. They probably just about remember dial-up.

There's a damn depressing thought.

Re: Successful?

I don't think her looks are as much of a story as the fact that she's still a vrigin. Not just a virgin through choice mind you, as she pointed out on her first show. She was joking. But it got all blown out of proportion. She's a decent singer, but there's something creepy about the media circus. ...

Re: Religion and America in 'Around the World', BBC2..

 Why thank you. My comment on my skepticism on those polls *was* indicative of my never having seen them before, and not, you know, having the reaction as a result of having seen them. Thank you for spending valuable seconds on google for my edification.

Re: Nurse suspended for prayer offer

Since we don't know exactly what happened, let's just deal with it in abstract. I see nothing wrong with her offering to pray for her patients, and if that's what happened, we should be outraged. On the other hand, if "offering to pray for her patients" is just a euphemism for"badgeri...

Re: Religion and America in 'Around the World', BBC2..

I've heard that repeated ad nauseum, but I just can't believe it. It makes me wonder about the poll's methods. How they phrased the question, how they polled people, what their sample size was.

Re: Weirdest behaviour by a member of stuff yet?

d'ya mean to tell me that there's been nothing odd since 2006? I find that very hard to believe. Especially as I have memories from 2007 of being serenaded with snatches of old rock songs to illustrate ancient greek grammar.

Re: Banks (a.k.a - scum)

Robbery Victim - that was precisely why I always transferred my money the old fashioned way: cash in a briefcase. If RBS doesn't screw you over, the University will. NEVER give St Andrews American dollars expecting them to exchange it... they WILL gouge you on the exchange rate, and also take forev...

Re: Series Three of Heroes

. The main 'heroes' we have come to know are now more like general templates that can be played around with at will for the duration of an episode or mini-arc. The more cynical view is that it's a product of the flimsy characterizations in the writing; no one seems to know who these characters are ...

Re: Why do so many Americans hate liberals?

It's already falling apart. McCain managed to tape it back together by having Palin as his running mate, but she became so much of a spectacle, I think, it's turned off a lot of people who supported him. I think it's a pity he (or the republican leadership) have tried to play by the old republican r...

Re: Why do so many Americans hate liberals?

And what it means and how it is viewed varies depends on where you are. In the San Francisco Bay Area, pretty much everyone identifies as liberal. Not being liberal means being a bigoted, small-minded, survivalist gun nut. Which means, as you can imagine, that there's quite a lot of room for some re...
