Re:

William Shatner would be amazing. But in all seriousness how about Robbie Coltrane? I think his mum (at least used to) live in St Andrews so he'd be up here anyway.

Re:

From what I remember it's about 2-3 hours to Osaka and Kyoto by train from Tokyo. Then I think Hiroshima was another 3 hours after that, so it's doable. The trains go pretty fast, and the weird thing is they are usually on time. If you have a rail pass you can't use the nozomi trains that go straigh...

Re:

I went last year knowing only a few words (thank you etc) and I got along fine, though I was visiting friends there. I bought the Rough Guide to Japan and that was pretty helpful for places to eat/visit etc. In Tokyo I really liked the Ginza, Shinjuku, Ueno and Asakusa districts. Senso-ji in Asakusa...

Re:

If you go for one of the central halls then it's not that far to all the shops/takeaways in the town centre anyway. 5 min walk if that. Only ones for postgrads that are more of a trek (by trek I mean about a 20 min walk to town centre) are Albany Park and DRA. DRA has bistro anyway as mentioned plus...

Quoting poppy from 02:37, 27th Nov 2005 Do they give us an idea of the true working future???????? No. In undergrad labs most things work, and they give you a nice set of instructions to follow. When you do research lab you realise that they were actually being really nice to you. "Real" chemistry ...

Quoting LC from 13:53, 15th Oct 2005 If anyone had dared suggest that DRH could've done with a bar.. There was a (albeit small) bar in DRH. It was in the Nisbet room but they only opened it in the summer for the conferences. And you forgot to mention the short and curly hairs to be found in said pr...

Hey, New guy in my lab had the same problem today and he had to sort it out with IT services. I think it was something to do with him having registered outside of a computer classroom. I tried emailing him when it wasn't activated but the mail didn't come back, so I guess that would happen with your...

Re:

You sound like you're not going to but don't go into third year chemistry if you really don't like it. It's 9-12 labs 5 days per week in 3rd year and if you have a problem with it then that plus lectures will be difficult. Having said that I've managed to make it into 5th yr of the MChem whilst stil...

Think there's a leaflet you can pick up on CVs and covering letters at the careers advisory service too.

Try http://www.nms.ac.uk/scotland/index.asp?m=1&s=3 which has directions to the Museum of Scotland. No idea about where the opium lounge is though. Have fun :)

Some of my "friends" really hurt me last year and I found after a while that the only way I could move on was to talk to them, so maybe try that if you haven't already. Re:

Given that we have no hall common room yet and it's so far out of town I think it's unfair of them to give these restrictions. Partys here are the only way I've gotten to meet people outside my flat in DRA. I know they're not stopping people from having them but it's going to put a lot of people off...
