I managed to pick up a very good deal from Dell's outlet. http://www.dell.co.uk/outlet/ I got an Inspiron 8500 for £500 less than the retail price, but there are lower-end models on the site too.

Re:

You could always get a wired account and get database access there.

Incidentally, they've got MySQL and Coldfusion on various ITS machines, but they don't like the idea of people having shell accounts, let alone databases.

Re:

Almost every hosting company will have PHP installed. Most will have databases of some kind, usually MySQL or IIS. All you need to worry about is placing the PHP scripts in your web space.

We don't have MySQL - we run PostgreSQL. It's better.

Contact w00t@wired.st-and.ac.uk if you want to get access to a database.

Re:

I've got a 64MB card, so I set my AGP aperture to 64MB, but it doesn't seem to have any real effect.

I think more important than aperture size is the AGP bus speed. That's the rate at which data and instructions can be sent from RAM to the Video RAM on your graphics card.

I got a MRi "single-port router/bridge" from scan.co.uk. Basically, it's an ADSL modem with a single ethernet port at the back. You can link this to your ethernet card, but because it's also a router you can simply plug it into a cheap hub to share your line. It's also got a USB port at the back and...

Re:

Actually, I think the owners of a Ltd company have to hold just over 50% of the shares (even if it's just one share over). The point is that the owners will always have the majority vote in any decisions that are made. So a hostile takeover is effectively impossible. In this country at least. Of cou...

Let me see if I can remember my Business Studies A-Level. A Private Limited Company (Ltd) only gives out shares to people it wants to, while the owner(s) of the company hold 50% or more of the shares. It's not floated on the stock exchange, so there's no way a hostile takeover can occur.

You won't have a limiting firewall on your ADSL connection by default, unless you get an ultra-cheap ADSL provider. The ResNet firewall pretty much cuts off everything except web, ftp, email and ssh/telnet connections. But, I really recommend you install your own firewall, like ZoneAlarm. As I said,...

Two weeks after the release? Surely they meant "before"? :)

The BBC seem to have a vendetta against BitTorrent though. The way they harp on about it, you'd think it was going to end civilisation as we know it.

You can change the drive letters under Win2K Pro, by going to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management, then click on Disk Management. If you right-click on any drive in that window you can change the drive letters, and even map directories as virtual hard drives.

Re:

Easy answer: you can get ADSL in St Andrews, but you can't get cable. ADSL should be plenty fast enough. I don't know what Blueyonder's cable service offers, but NTL's is only 128kilobits/sec. My PlusNET ADSL connection is £22/month and is 512kilobits/sec download, 256kilobits/sec upload. You can ge...
