Re: Eco-Luddites Strike Again!

I'm on another side still, I suppose. I think the anti-science agenda (in thinking that scientists, given half a chance, would turn the entire planet into the most absurd laboratory ever conceived) simply misses the point. It's an exaggeration over what TCB's saying, but it's not a far cry from that...

Re: Gay AND Catholic?

Speaking of the abhorrent existence of the concept of actual tickling, here's an intriguing wee thought:

Re: I think a few IR professors need to live in the real wor

I dunno, shouldn't we be tearing things apart publicly? Otherwise there is no critical public discourse, no reflexivity. I can't think of anything better for a population than a bit of self reflection. I'd venture that WQ's objection isn't the tearing things apart, but tearing it apart whilst the t...

What an unabashed nitwit. Any tweeter knows not to use punctuation in a hashtag. "youareafewyearslate", not "you'reafew..."

Honestly.

Re: Gay AND Catholic?

Macgamer - I was trying to come up with something more thoughtful and in-depth, but the following which I flippantly 'devised' in tiredness earlier is, I think, still of some value (if only for rephrasing the thrust of RedCelt's outlook in a way that's palateable and not burdened with other trapping...

Re: The Scale of the Universe

Given the Pale Blue Dot/Psalms exchange of broadsides in the Gay & Catholic thread, this seems indisputably unifying and appropriate:

Re: Gay AND Catholic?

Faith is not just subscribing to a list of beliefs and theology. It is a gift from God which is accepted freely has the power to bring about inner transformations and drives people to seek a personal relationship with God. Last year, despite the hellish nature of it, bore great spiritual fruit and ...

Re: Women in the KK

I don't really have much of an interest in university politics, but I have a passing level of curiosity regarding the existence of the Kate Kennedy Club/Foundation/Fellowship/Association et al... Historic Kate Kennedy Club in St Andrews to admit women . Does this mean that the new KK will fold, or ...

Re: Gay AND Catholic?

I'm not gay. I probably could be (as in I have no objections, it might suit me were it a choice), and as a teenage Catholic it was always something of a vague worry: "But what if I am?". After the tentative advances of many a chap over the years, I can happily (as in with a sigh of relief ...

Re: Women in the KK

All glory to the KKF. The KKF will have a selected 'ruling body' which, by the sounds of it, will be the style of the old KKC, but with women welcome, selected from the KKF's 'membership', which is just like the old KKC's recruiting pool...but now including women. Depending on how many old KKC folk...

Re: Slutwalk

G13, you see the (somewhat laughable, by any metric) quandary this leaves me with? I use crippled solely to denote something incapacitating; referring to a person as a cripple is something I've no truck with. I happen to think my way's better. Preserves the use of the word, neutralise the pejorative...

Re: Slutwalk

In danger of concurring with RedCelt, on the 'slut' point on it's own (i.e. gender-loaded words), I'd say the trivial solution is just to call men sluts. Thus weakening the load on women? It hardly deals with the associated issues, but it seems the sensible first port of call (though it hardly requi...

Re: Why do facts exist?

Macgamer, that has me both chuckling and (except for this sentence) largely speechless. As an aside I'm reading the latest book ( The First Heretic ) in a series which sports such wonderful quips as "Blasphemy," the god said to the priest, "is a victimless crime" and "At las...

Re: South Street fire?

Gossip from in the Vineleaf was that it was Jahanghir's fire. Perhaps their fishpond caught fire? Or maybe the rivals from Chillies & Peppers decided they needed stronger tactics?

Re: Library Redevelopment

...I know from speaking to various lecturers recruited at that time that Arnott always personally attended (and participated in) interviews for lectureships, because of the value he placed on high-quality recruitment. (Lang, needless to say, did not.) Wow. If that is true (and I do wonder how repre...

Re: Arsing around or arson around?! - New Park Fire

As an aside, I hear tale by way of CSI Fife that there were indeed injuries yesterday, though no other details yet on that. I nipped back past it on my way home from work today and there's a rather fetching 'police line do not cross' thing put up. Also, yep, Fawksie, that's pretty much the spot I'd ...

Arsing around or arson around?! - New Park Fire

Frank reports So, sitting in the room this afternoon drinking tea, I look up and gaze out the window. I try to do this once a day, at least. There before me was nothing less than a gargantuan plume of smoke! From the window to the plume lay most likely: - The Botanic Gardens - The primary school bes...

Re: Library Redevelopment

I suspect there could actually be a sensible argument in 'tarting up' the library. Except that there's a difference between a superficial change (throw a bit of money at it, change the rugs) and a guided (I suspect 'ergonomic' would be the most vaguely appropriate word). However, my knowledge of arc...
