Re: Siena

Well I for one am glad that the election rules now afford candidates the freedom to do videos and use the internet without restrictions.

Re: General Council Fee

There's no way around it unless you choose not to graduate. Membership of the General Council, oddly enough, is a statutory requirement. I thought it was a bit cheeky charging this extra hidden fee at the time, but given the choice, I decided that I'd rather graduate!

Re: G20 Protests

the old truism: "If you're under 30 and conservative you have no heart, if you're over 30 and liberal you have no brain." A truism is, by definition, true. That quote is not. A Truism is something that is widely held to be true, irrespective of the actualité. I have apparently read a vers...

Re: G20 Protests

As a student, I was disgusted at how readily other students were to dictate to me which issues were relevant to me. Promoting debate, though? No, students can do that themselves, surely the purpose of a student Union is to represent and cater for the interests of students. Dividing , or taking up a...

Re: G20 Protests

The lefties are revolting! Meh! Good for whoever went out there. If I was in a more cynical mood I'd point out the fallacy of an anti capitalist march perpetrated by students who would not be in university without the evil, usurious student loans underwriting their expenses. Today, I'm feeling more ...

Re: Postal Strike

I don't trust the management as far as I could throw them. But I'm uncharacteristically with them on this one. Yeah, modernization probably does translate into job losses and hour/wage cuts, and the secret correspondence, if true, is a bit stupid. But sorry pal, the Private sector's been bearing the...

Re: Starfields... flogging a dead horse?

I take your point to a certain degree. I have seen this sort of pattern in other organisations, clubs etc where you have a mode of operation that works, becomes old faithful and keeps things ticking along. Then people, such as myself moan and request something different such as a headline band. The...

Re: Starfields... flogging a dead horse?

To be perfectly honest whilst I can follow the premise of the argument here regarding the quality of acts, my disappointment is to be found not with the said acts, but in the genre. It has become apparent to me that there is a bias towards what I, as a relative 'oldy' term 'Dance Music', and not ne...

Re: Starfields... flogging a dead horse?

Not that I want to reinforce the view that this board is full of union hacks or anything, but... Isn't Starfields still a union event? Last I checked, it was a sub-group within St Andrews Radio which existed to organise and promote those sorts of things. The whole, Starfields, vs Union mentality is ...

Re: A new user's guide to the Sinner

According to last year's RAE results, St.Andrews has the third best film studies department in the UK. The only competitors were Warwick and East Anglia, which both have schools well in excess of the six people we keep in ours. It might just be the fact that I study it, but I don't see how film stu...

Re: STUDENT NEWSPAPER

The Saint is the principal student newspaper in St Andrews. In the past, some people have attempted to set up rival publications which have all fizzled out after a year or so, if not earlier. The Saint is independant of the University and the Union, which gives it the editorial freedom that every g...

Is higher education screwed?

What a fortnight it's been. Social engineering is to replace stuffy elitist rubbish like "education" as a University's primary reason for being. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8192234.stm The Tories have pointed out the bleeding obvious; that subjects with historical legitimacy and a...

Re: Who is the best current stand-up?

Michael Macintyre. He's like a young, dark-haired Boris Johnston. Best thing going at the moment! Ed Bryne's a close second. I kid, I kid. But seriously, I do think that the problem is that women comedians are just that: *women* comedians, not simply comedians who happen to be women. It's a bit like...

Re: THIS HOUSE BELIEVES

In the interests of debate, I shall present a theoretical rebuttal to the above. In terms of money, the Union Debating Society (hereafter, UDS) saw its grant from the Union slashed last year, and this situation is likely to get worse before it gets better. Conversely, UDS has seen a boost in support...

Re: Artificial Sperm and Transhumanism

Firstly I'll just deal with homosexuality. Homosexuality is neither unitive or procreative. It is not unitive because it is not a meeting of two complementary individuals in love. Additionally it is also intrinsically closed to procreation. On separating the Unitive and the Procreative aspects: Som...

Swine Flu Funding.

Been a while since the last argument over an independent Scotland. What better way to start one off than this blatant example of Scottish poor-mouthing. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8158972.stm An SNP minister asks the UK government to bail them out on a devolved issue. That doesn't even need...

Re: Freshmen 2009

Halls of residence will be organizing some form of pub crawl on evenings of the first weekend (although past events showed certain individuals to be appropriately cretinous as to fail even in that simple task). I agree, you should definitely make sure you tag along to any events the halls are runnin...

Re: Grad ball ticket exchange

RE: Andrew. Pretty much the answer I expected. I appreciate forgery is a concern, but the printed tickets contain foil lettering which can't be easily photocopied. Holographs and watermarks can also be added to tickets to make forgery more difficult (although with the right equipment, not impossible...
