Re: A tax on grief? Can we change this?

The L and stylised L (£) are from the old name for pound, the Latin librae, so that example's not much cop either.

Re: A tax on grief? Can we change this?

You'll be wanting to check that, there is no sense in which CTT is an acronym. I don't ask that they be unique, nor are my panties in a bunch, I just don't think we should go sticking nonsense letters in in order to avoid being the same as something else. As you yourself pointed out, IHT returns the...

Re: A tax on grief? Can we change this?

That it is widely used, or accepted, is irrelevant to my point - there's no H. So the 1986 "rebranding" to Inheritance Tax/IHT was stupid. At least when it was Capital Transfer Tax or Estate Duty the abbreviation (not acronym) actually represented the words, unless some civil servant/polit...

Re: A tax on grief? Can we change this?

Am I being really stupid? IHT? What's the H stand for? Or are we talking about In Heritance Tax?

Re: What harm could it do?

So if instead of prayer he earnestly believed that treating her by purging her and bleeding her was the absolutely right thing to do would that be okay too?

Re: University challenge

Well spotted, it originally read "the programme makers' failure..." and I neglected to remove the apostrophe when I recast the sentence. Ho hum.

Re: University challenge

Doubtless. But just because other worse things happen is no reason not to try to avoid small errors. We ought to be able to punctuate without losing our concern for bigger issues, or surrendering our morals or our humanity, presuming our brains work more or less as they're supposed to - it's really ...

Re: University challenge

I grant you that the programme makers' managed to get it wrong a few years ago, but one would hope that anyone actually in the running for the team would know where the apostrophe does, or does not, go in their university's name.

Re: Degree Certificates

Why? Mine are all framed and up on the wall, who would ever see a barcode on the back? And would you not rather the University could readily verify if the certificates were real or fake?

Re: Degree Certificates

It would be, yes, but that's not what was on them, there's a school of thought that doesn't care for the subtracted numbers, preferring VIIII to IX as being purer. In fact, where I said I-IX really should have been I-VIIII as that's what was employed.

Re: Degree Certificates

Glasgow's degrees are foolscap (13.5" x 17"), on a fairly heavy paper stock (I'd guess about 120gsm), and they are very much printed - signatures and all. They have an embossed seal, which is part of the paper as it is bought in, around/beside which the text is printed on - exactly as St A...

Re: dwindling numbers

Discovered Graham Stewart's book? That would be my personal copy which I gave to the Society! There is, of course, a copy in the Library too.

Re: BNP gains 2 seats and UKIP gains 13 in EU

It's not even about homosexuality, it's about simple equality before the law, and that should apply to us all, not to some arbitrarily defined subset.

Re: BNP gains 2 seats and UKIP gains 13 in EU

The UEN grouping has two more MEPs than it had a week ago. The socialists have many more, and the unaligned has been dramatically swollen by the Conservatives leaving the EEP, I'm not sure we're seeing the dreadful rise of the far-right bogeyman to be honest.
