A la recherche du temps perdu

Long time no see! I was a poster on these pages for several years before I started a BD in the University but I have visited very little since. I graduate (d.v.) this June (44years after the first time). Are there enough old stagers still visiting for it to be worth keeping up? And, in that connecti...

If the Principal wants to be a fashion icon, I do wish she would get her robes right. When she was in the Citizen the other week with the caption "University Principal" but wearing the Vice-Chancellor's gown, I put it down to the sub-editor. However she is now on the University website hom...

Sorry to seem pedantic (actually, I'm not - it is what the Sinner is for :D ) but I am genuinely perplexed; how does one vote very strongly? Say "Aye" in a stentorian voice? Jump up and down saying "Me, me me"?

Re: Model Principal!?

Surely its a wind up? Otherwise what was she thinking of? Apart from anything else there is the aesthetic side. The Principal is a well preserved woman but she is no spring chicken. In the second photograph she seems to hink she is a pedestrian Kate Kennedy with four bejants on either side. And why ...

Semi Formal Dress for BD students

I don't know if there is still anyone out there, but I have a question. I am starting a BD course at St Mary's in September. I believe I do not get to wear the St Mary's undergraduate gown but should wear my graduate gown, which raises a question. On what occasions should I wear my BSc hood with it?

Guide to St Andrews

I will be starting a course at St Mary's in September. It is forty-five years since I as last a bejant and the old grey toun must have changed in the interim. I would, therefore, like to know what is what these days. Unfortunately, the Sinner's Guide does not seem to have been updated since I was th...

Book Signings, correct dress

Since all has gone very quiet, maybe the experts will have time to give me advice. I have twice recently been invited to a book signing ( as a "rabble" guest, not a principal). In each case I felt my dress was inappropriate - in the first I as mistaken for the author, and in the second I s...

Re: University Tartan?

Nevertheless, should you still be interested (or indeed play golf), you would probably need to have a reputable tailor order the cloth from Kinloch Anderson Ltd. themselves and have them made up. I can't think of any tailors in St. Andrews that still make clothing, but there are likely some in Dund...

They are, however, not banned from grubbing for votes on Facebook and similar, which is unfortunate and a little gauche.

Less so than starting a thread on the Sinner! But then I am a sinister person!

General Council Elections

There seem to be a number of Sinners (Some reformed, perhaps) standing for the General Council Business Committee. All General Council members have a vote. Voting is over the internet. A username and password is required. If you have not received details 'phone (0)1334 462103. The Best of Luck to al...

Re: Unisex toilets

At the old union in St Andrews, because it had grown from the union of mens and ladies union, we had a ladies cloakroom at the west end, a mens cloakroom at the east end, and a unisex facility in the middle (behind "Old Union Reception). THere is very little new under the sun.

American Rector?

Quoting sheerbrillance from 03:52, 15th Sep 2008 It's a pity the US Presidential election is after the rectorial election. Sarah Palin might be looking for a foreign affairs post that would stand her in good stead for the Palin 2012 campaign... On a similar line of thought Condoleezza Rice will be ...

Re:

Quoting Humphrey from 09:43, 9th Jul 2008 Returning to the topic for a second. It's worth remembering that 67 British nationals died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks which put it in the same league of national tragedy as the 7/7 attacks. I only say this because popular memory seems to suggest that 9/1...

Famous Authors

Jo's favourite book when she was about seven was "Last Term at Mallory Towers" by Enid Blyton. It finishes with the heroine preparing to go to St Andrews University.

Quoting Steveo from 17:34, 20th Jun 2008 I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't for the life of me find it. Quoting Lid from 00:25, 28th Mar 2008 Quoting atckid from 00:37, 27th Mar 2008 . . .apparently it was due to some kind of high power anti-missile (artillery?) laser which was being tested at leuchars; something to do with non-chemical lasers?
