Re: International Break!!

Updates (Kizzy may have the full tab somewhere but this will help) Reinier very kindly put scans of the full tab up on his Facebook wall after I asked him for results. I have saved them, but don't know of a way to post from a scan on here. If it's indeed the final version it gives Rachel 6= with Th...

Re: WANT TO BE ON THE BOARD OF TEN? AGM!

Schools Secretary The Schools Secretary is responsible for organising Society members to attend Courier debates, ICYD, and running the St Andrews Senior Schools Debating Competition. And, we hope, also the Ross Cup? Any idea on a date for this? Recent years have been 30th April 08, 2nd May 07, 26th...

Re: Cork Worlds 2009

Tab is up. Go to Colm Flynn and follow link through Google. And yes it was 4 points - maybe that's less teeth-grinding than one. Ah well - the little bird will be reading this eventually - sorry for passing on wrong info. Really well done to everyone - and admiration for Miles' new look as seen in p...

Re: Cork Worlds 2009

Am told by a little bird who is cleverly able to type Facebook messages that they actually missed it by - one speak. We are assured somewhere that the tab is coming 'by the end of Monday' so we shall see if the little bird is right!

Re: Cork Worlds 2009

Most people probably know every in and out of the voting by now if they've been following online - but for St Andreans tuning in to The Sinner only, the new World Champions are Will Jones and James Dray of Oxford A. Lots of you will remember Will from season 0304 when, as a pupil at Aberdeen Grammar...

Re: Cork Worlds 2009

Sorry Owen - I don't have a magic answer to that one! It'll appear eventually. Just keep checking Jens and Colm. If I find it before you do (geekery competition here, as you remarked earlier!) I'll post.

Every good wish to you and all the UDS for continuing and greater success in 2009.

Re: Cork Worlds 2009

If you rootle through the comments on Jens' blog you will find (a) that I put up the St A results as best I could and (b) that my friend on the other side of the world and I were having a laugh about us being ‘debating tragics … hunched over our computers’. I was just teasing. :) Now for the break a...

Re: Cork Worlds 2009

Rumour has it that Oxford B and Sydney B are in contention for top of the tab(disdainful look). Hey c'mon - Oxford B are lovely guys - they've experienced the delights of a Dundee drunk walking right into the path of our car in which they were passengers, rolling across the bonnet, bending the wing...

Re: Schools Competition

It was good! - and appreciated by its participants. Lunch was especially wonderful - I don't think I have ever had smoked salmon sandwiches at a schools comp before! - well, not at domestic level anyway. I think I might have agreed with the losing side of the split on the final judging panel :o but ...

Re: Mace 2008-2009

Also its not that rare - there are dozens of compound plurals. But not all of them sound as un-English as, say, sheriffs-substitute; most people can manage courts-martial and mothers-in-law. However several of the speakers in the actual debate referred to PFs - there not being, I think, an elegant ...

Just realised this sounds as though I'm getting at you, Laura - I'm absolutely not!! - was just discussing it with Dickie but two hours ago and then came home and found your post so thought I would be pedantic!

Re: Mace 2008-2009

THW directly elect procurator fiscals. Actually it's 'procurators fiscal' - one of the fairly rare instances in English where the noun precedes the adjective - and English adjectives are not known for their policy on agreements. This correct usage is of course undermined by popular references to 't...
