Re:

[s] I wouldn't pick it if a not a lot has been done on it previously. Even with plenty of primary sources it can still be difficult to write 12,000 relevant words and easy to go off the subject. Remember this is a dissertation not a phd, you don't need to offer the world a new insight to Charles II...

Re:

Quoting from 21:42, 16th Apr 2008 before you approach a tutor how do you come up with a title? Can it be something that you have a interet in studying but have not done in university? Unless the rules have changed significantly in the last few years, you can choose any subject you like, so long as ...

Re:

Does a degree mean anything? Of course it can , otherwise respectable companies wouldn't pay an absolute fortune each year to recruit good graduates. However, as exnihilo says, without good experience, interviewing skills, etc, it rarely gets you very far. I feel really sorry for individuals who hav...

Quoting Hennessy from 10:24, 3rd Mar 2008 Unfortunately for these girls being a single mum is a viable career option. Perhaps if we stopped paying these people to be so promiscous then eventually they might stop. Just a thought What would be your alternative solution when a single women without fin...

Re:

Years ago when I was in hall a couple went to the extreme lengths of putting a notice up by the dining hall refuting rumours (which until that point I hadn't heard!) that they'd been having sex in the shower. Part of the 'evidence' in their defense was that fact that it was "physically impossible" t...

Re:

Quoting exnihilo from 04:18, 16th Feb 2008 It'd be a disgrace if Brian had a portrait. Gawd, that would be like damn near every Principal we ever had. How dare he. Eh? Presumably this is sarcasm but I never noticed a post which suggested that Lang shouldn't get a portrait - only some flippant remar...

Re:

So Brian's leaving is he?

Can anyone tell me then if he's got round to having an overly-large, ego-stroking portrait of himself made yet? I so did enjoy looking at Struther Arnott's when I was still in St Andrews and would like to think there's a Lang version hanging around today.

Re:

I can totally empathise with the comments made on this thread. The transfer from student to graduate life can be really hard. After leaving St Andrews back in 2003 I felt bereft and to compensate threw myself 100% into what I thought would be my career, only to realise that two years following gradu...

The nature of my job (Recruitment Manager for a charity providing social care) means that I read through people's disclosures on a very regular basis. If we've gone to the bother and expense of requesting one, it means that we're pretty keen to hire that person and the only reasons we would refuse t...

Everyone has their own best method of revising, but whatever one it is, make sure that your brain is 'actively' thinking and making connections between facts rather than rote learning books and notes. My personal approach to revising history was to use spider diagrams. I would have say, a particular...

Re:

Depending on what you want to do, you may not even have to do a transfer year. Many postgrad courses, particularly more vocational ones (eg. management, marketing, etc) will only ask that you have a degree and don't specify what it has to be in.

And suck sweets regularly to keep your throat hydrated. Cough sweets are obviously good, but you probably don't want to be on them constantly so any kind of hard sweet will do as an alternative.

I think that student support services used to run a support group for those with eating disorders. You could contact them and see if it's still running.

Didn't the site start about 2001/02 as st-adz - a classified ad webpage? Then it started marketing itself as a rival to the Saint with (some pretty awful) news stories, and then the forums were created. I know the first ever time I posted was to complain about how badly written a particular news sto...

NUS stands for the National Union of Students. The majority of UK universities are members of this body and thus their students are entitled to carry NUS cards which offer certain discounts in shops, cinemas and stuff. The cards used to be free but these days they cost £10. However, as St Andrews is...

I'm struck by the fact that you ascribe your poor marks to "apathy and disillusionment". If so, it suggests that a St Andrews university course is not the right thing for you at this time. Honours courses are much more hard going than sub-honours so what's the point in breaking your back to get in t...
