Re: Trams in Edinburgh

I'm sure I'll come to love the tram line in the end, as a whole network of them work delightfully well back home in Helsinki (which has more or less the same population and city centre geography/traffic as Edinburgh). Having said that, there's also nothing more soul-destroying than trying to walk ac...

I've had Estonia's singer stuck in my head all day. If she were a president, she'd be Babebraham Lincoln.

Re: Eurovision!

I've always appreciated Eurovision in at least a slightly non- har har way, having grown to love it outside of Britain (i.e. sans Terry attitude). Yes, my all-time favourite acts are still the cheesy ones (i.e. 2002's S.A.G.A.P.O by Michalis Rakintzis). Yes, I can't wait for the painfully awkward di...

Re: Eurovision!

Iceland FTW!
I may be slightly biased towards Nordic eye candy though. Overall a pretty decent ballad, and their set design is fantastic!

Also... is it me or are Bosnia & Herzegovina basically just wearing Coldplay / Sgt. Pepper attire and channeling 'Can't help falling in love' ?

Re: Star Trek (spoilers)

Words... No worries, I do love First Contact. As for the 'DS9 movie' comment... fair enough. :D Though any kind of narrative break from Federation starship crews would have been nice, and ample juicy plot material. I suppose the harsh truth for cinematic feature film funding and narrative is that i...

Re: Star Trek (spoilers)

A set of piss-poor comics that can be found online were released as a countdown to the film. They set the scene in the future of our familiar timeline and explain Nero's character in more, but far from adequate detail. The plot of the film could definitely have done with more balancing to deliver a ...

Re: On the Rocks

I suspect that Halfcut will fizzle out in the next couple of years anyway. For the whole time we've been involved it has relied on a very close team of film makers to supply product. What I find amazing is that the various competitions, screenings and showcases have now amounted to what is essentia...

Re: Successful?

I also feel that success in one's own life should be measured by a feeling of balance and contentment. But as Frank already suggested, this can be attained in a number of ways. Some people are happy to live on a razor's edge, with life-changing challenges around every corner. Others seek out the sim...

Re: People who are awesome

Stephen Fry.

There seem to be absolutely no limits to his fascination of the world around us, from the truly profound to the twitteringly pointless. And he goes about his day with such a perfectly charming personality...

Re: Watchmen

Great, laid-back pacing from the very beginning, and yes, some beautiful eye-candy cinematography. The acting was decent throughout, and whatever qualms I might have had with plot/actors soon went away when I realised that this was no Spiderman 3. Snyder is clearly a big fanboy, but that in itself d...

Re: Dollhouse

I was left more 'meh' than confused, and I guess to make things more cohesive I would have liked them to focus mainly on her mystery. Sure the series will be built somewhat around these one-off episodes where she gets to try on a new personality, but this first outing with the kidnap was a bit borin...

Re: List your all time top 5 favourite computer/video games

This will probably reveal me to be a total Sierra / Lucasarts 2d action-adventure fanboy, but... what the heck: 1) Monkey Island series (with part 2 definitely holding its own) 2) Quest for Glory series 3) Gabriel Knight series 4) Civilization series 5) World of Warcraft Other favourites include Por...

Re: Eurovision

Times like these, I guess, I wish I was from Finland. At least I'd be proud of what we churned out. XD Just posted under an anonymous reply by mistake, so apologies for the slight double post. Fortunately it'll give me time to correct myself. You see I was going on about how we're not doing metal t...

Re: Islay Whisky Festival

Managed to to do an awesome week-long Islay-Jura-Colonsay-Oronsay-Oban-Mull-Staffa-Iona-Applecross road trip with a good friend after my own graduation back in '06. Being both whisky lovers, this naturally involved tours and tastings at all of the distilleries along the way. Best weather ever, and g...

I found this neat sculpture (origins from a region of Pakistan) at the Louvre's wing dedicated to Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Needles to say this area of the museum attracts far less visitors than the Mona Lisa, and is kind of hard to get to in the first place. The anthropologist in me h...

Re: Quality TV Shows to Help Procrastination

I cannot imagine anything more procrastination friendly than buying all the series of The Wire. Pretty much defines the word quality. If you want the intelligent description, its like a russian novel with a huge cast of properly developed characters and handling some pretty deep questions. What I l...

James Tiberius Kirk

http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/ Trailer 2: Discuss... Destined to head into the worst areas of J. J. Abrams' Lost-style narrative storytelling, and ultimately disappoint? Re: Words that make you cringe

Now that the US elections are over, I have to admit that I simply can't stand the phrase or concept of the 'presidential ticket'. It seems like for the duration of the run-up to the elections everyone and their dog, including amateur political pundits and BBC commentators, can't get enough of talkin...

Re: Series Three of Heroes

Often with cult serial tv shows (Lost, 24 ad nauseum) you have the very tight narrative bookends to each series, along with perhaps the odd mid-season two-parter that keeps you hooked, while the rest of the good storytelling is few and far between. The opposite happened to me with this third coming ...
