SSDC Criteria

Well, seeing as I defined the judging criteria, a quick explanation: After a couple of years you drop off the list to reflect: 1. Re:

Well, it is sponsored by Baillie Gifford if I remember rightly, and as they do my job I would not be surprised if the motion was chosen with that in mind. In fact,I look forward to seeing their representative there to find out why the hell they turned down my job application last year...

ANCIENTS

Congratulations to Connie and Doug, the new champions of the Glasgow Ancients!

Also Rachael and Chris for making the semi's, and Connie for being Best speaker in the final, and Doug best on tab.

It seems there is no stopping them now...

Re:

Edinburgh used to have a "Macer", an officer in a similar role who was responsible for organising formal debates. It was a dismal failure. Debates were awful, poorly thought out, and regularly cancelled. This was due to the removal of the society's most visible and important remit from its most visi...

Re:

Well, no, because largely it's the business of any given debating society what does and does not happen to their trophy. The Marquess trophy has long been a roaming one now, and never fails to find its way home for each successive tournament!

Re:

Normally a contract becomes legally enforcable only on the exchange of "adequate consideration" between both parties. Which would imply the payment of a deposit. Regardless, this is sadly a problem that has seemed to occur more and more frequently down the years. In the past debates have been held i...

Congratulations!

Hi all, just back from the continent and got the good news!

Congratulations to all - this was truly a performance to be proud of by Team St Andrews. You've no idea how happy I was to be woken up to the news that the Kiddiewinks broke...

It's nice to see people continuing to do well across the breadth of the society.

It is of course marginally more useful if you tell us which of these are St Andrews students, as I am sure the freshers are all lovely people but I don't know who they are yet....

The competition in the end was won by Niall (GUU) and Jenny (Dundee).

Congrats though to Jason and Connie on topping the tab and especially in taking that room of death!

Or, rather than relying on people doing stuff Ian, you may often find it easier to find the information yourself.

Re:

Having worked with all the competitively minded speakers this year, I have no doubts that the set up is there to keep St Andrews moving forward and hopefully continue winning titles.

Don't forget that it's about a 2-year lead in time before speakers tend to approach anything like their peak...

You may not see the improvement Ewan, but I do and I think that many of the "development" speakers would disagree with you. What is it that makes you think that Euros is so great for imparting experience and Worlds isn't? There's no magical difference except Worlds has 9 rounds instead of 6 (arguabl...

Re:

And in answer to DIckie's question, IV wins were announced in LPH debates last year to much applause. Due to lab work commitments I was unable to attend LPH this semester and have no idea if our wins at Aberdeen and Edinburgh were similarly declared to the House.

Re:

On the "glorious past"... For the record, I can only find documented evidence of 2 wins by St Andrews teams prior to 2001 (when I started university). 1998 - Dundee IV (Bibby and Whitmore) 1995 - Glasgow Caledonian IV (Beveridge and Dunn). Oh, and a Bogwall win in 1982. St Andrews previous worlds re...

The Mace: Jason & John in the final. Aaron and Chris in the Semis. Doug & Connie, Rachael & Oli in the second round. Anish & Tom , Rob & Luke, in the first round. In addition I topped the individual tab at Birmingham and Durham, in addition to Jason recieving a few best speaker in final awards.
