Last year's arrangements were a nonsense

As someone who graduated last year, I just hope that you lot don't end up with the same situation I had. It started about this time last year when I got told that I had to pay the £43 graduation fee for my PhD. So, I paid it by bank transfer and decided to graduate in absentia. Later, Cash Office in...

How to deal with spammy messages

As a former moderator of this message board, here's my experiences of how to deal with spam messages. (I'm not sure if any of these have changed) These actions can be done by the Sinner's Admin people or by the moderator assigned to the board. The moderator should be a member of the Project Anime co...

Powers of Honorary Life Membership

Unless they've changed anything since I left the University, Honorary life membership (HLM) is pretty much what it says on the tin! It means that you are a member of the society until you either die or your 'HLM' status is revoked by a future committee or the University/ Students' Association is no ...

Re:

Hmm, well I didn't have a problem with Crest of the Stars. However, one problem with Banner of the Stars was that you didn't manage to get the entire series in time for us to show it all. (I think you were 1 DVD short) As for honorary life memberships, I think the honorary life membership for Regina...

Re:

Oink! In terms of people getting to see Jin Roh, I don't think you'd need to go searching the world to find former President Per. Doesn't the society still have Jin Roh in its VHS collection (subtitled)? [That's how we showed it when I was Da Prez] Hmm, Per's still around in St. Andrews - I thought ...

Re:

I think there is, or at least when I was at the University. I believe that it was called Neo-Tokyo or Neotokyo. It was definitely around in 2002-2003 (others can confirm whether or not it's still around).

Re:

Oh well, someone's answered one of my questions about the University (its debt situation). I was surprised that the University's planned debts are only about £25M (that's about a third of their annual income, I think). How much are the rest of their debts, then ? (the unplanned, non long-term stuff)...

For my 2 Yen's worth, I'll have to say that for all the 'unregsitered users', who in certain people's opinion, apparently snipe/ talk crap/ whatever, they are in the minority. I don't have any bias for or against them, they're not the only ones who do the bad things mentioned above. There are probab...

For your allocation in Stanley Smith House, 0501 means that you will be staying in Flat 5 and you will be in bedroom 01. I stayed in Stanley Smith House from Sept 2002- Aug 2003 and wrote the entry about it for The Sinner's Guide. I do wonder if much has changed since I left! Stanley Smith and Angus...

Re:

Personally, I think that when/ if the University sell Hamilton Hall and pocket the millions they'll get for it, it will go to another cause: It will most likely go to 'Save St Andrews from Bankruptcy/ Administration/ Going to the Wall', also known as the University trying to pay off its HUGE DEBTS!!...

What happens with graduate members

Question: People who are members of the Sinner are supposed to be students of the University of St Andrews. I graduated in absentia in the June ceremonies, so I am no longer a University student and my University e-mail account will come to an end very soon as well. What happens with graduate member...

Graduation - Has this happened to anyone else?

Has this happened to anyone here who is graduating this week? In March, I paid the graduation fee of £43 by international remittance (costing about 15,000 Yen or £75 including bank charges), as I am graduating in absentia (due to me being in Japan!). Then, on March 24th, the Cash Office sent me an e...

Just how bad are the University's finances?

Just one curiosity, here. Just how badly in debt is the University? Are we talking slight cashflow problem or a couple of steps away from administration/ bankruptcy? Given the proposed massive hikes in rents as well as in continuation fees for postgrads (and probably other fees as well), I do get th...

Re:

One thing I'll say about UT 2004 is that Atari's at least got something right! Finally, they're going to release the game on DVD-ROM (OK, they'll still do CD-ROM). Common sense at last, as opposed to mindless tedium of having to swap to CD 1,2,3, etc. How long have DVD-ROM drives been around? I hope...

Well, for my 2 Yen/ 2 cents, as someone who started their 1st post-doc stint 1/2 months ago, thank goodness I didn't start in the UK. Unlike others, I didn't go off to the USA or Europe, I went to Japan and my pay is the equivalent of about £24000 after tax (allowing for currency rates). Doom Lord G...
