Re:

I'd like to see Barack Obama running as VP for someone. His speech at the DNC was amazing, and unlike most politicians, he doesn't bore you to tears or scare the shit out of you a la Bush.

Re:

I know a lot of people outside the US (and quite a few of us inside it) don't understand how people can vote for Bush. I'm not going to say I can explain it, but I can post an email I got from my uncle, who's an evangelist Christian from Tennessee. The email makes him sound crazy, but he's not the B...

Re:

If you want something sort of intelligent but silly, try Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series. The first one is called The Eyre Affair. It's like Douglas Adams for book people instead of space people.

Re:

The first year courses are fine, nothing very difficult. I think ME1001 suffers a bit from trying to do too much-- they jump around a lot geographically, chronologically, and thematically, so it can get a bit confusing. Almost all the lecturers are good, though. I liked ME1002 a lot better, since it...

Glad you guys got things sorted, although as I'm not in St Andrews now it's all academic for me, sadly. Hope this term goes well too!

eh, let's hope it gets sorted out better than last year. I went to the first meeting, met some neat people, then nothing for months and months. most mysterious

Re:

eh, if you aren't a big fan then it's a bit of a waste, I'd think. Being the LOTR geek that I am, I've watched all the appendices, most of them several times, but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea. If you just want to catch up on the story and you don't care about how they made the chain mail,...

I'm sorry if what I said was taken as an anti-Scottish/UK uni system thing, because it wasn't really meant that way. I just think it's very easy to do what I did, which is to look at all the great things about St Andrews and listen to the people who tell you it's fantastic, and not really get a bala...

Re:

Sometimes even when you're with a small group it can be unapproachable, especially if you guys are obviously close and having fun. I mean, would you want to walk up to 3 or 4 guys who look like they're having the time of their lives, all to start chatting up one of them? I know I haven't got the gut...

Re:

yeah, REALLY make sure it's what you want. I loved my first year here in almost every way, but academically it was absolute shit-- I was bored sick in all my classes. If you've had a decent amount of preparation in what you want to study and/or you're very bright, be aware that you're probably not g...

Re:

I didn't think any of the courses I took last year were challenging in the slightest-- whoever said art history was hard must have been on crack. I did the advanced Latin course for first years and it had more work than my other modules, but still only about an hour a night instead of the 2 or 3 I w...

I have a good friend who was expelled from our school for shoplifting a CD. His parents sent him to a school pretty much like this one, except it's in the wilds of northern New Hampshire. He is there for a minimum of 2 years, during which he can't leave or have any contact with anyone the school doe...

Re:

i think you can definitely have relationships between 2 guys in books or out of it that don't scream homoeroticism. perhaps it's just the rather archaic phrasing, but the tirian/jewel relationship just reminds me very strongly of the victorian era. which was pretty much chock-full of homoeroticism.

Re:

i just reread the books again and the christian allegory bit is waaaaaay more apparent when you're older. kind of sad. i loved aslan as a kid, but now he seems overly preachy. and does anyone else find the relationship between tirian and jewel more than a little homoerotic? disregarding the fact tha...

they're hideous looking, though, sort of orangey-red and dark purple instead of the normal red they're supposed to be. i wouldn't bother, unless you want to go to debates and chapel a lot. or pool together with some friends and share it so you don't all have to pay loads of money,

Re:

best bet-- have both drunken parties AND intelligent conversation. if you just go out and drink and meet random people, chances are you'll never see them again. there were loads of people i met during fresher's week that i never saw after that. too bad.

but sometimes the boys do tend to sort of dominate the hall, not always in a good way. still, it's usually good fun there, although the main part of the hall is really oddly organized, so certain staircases only go to certain rooms and stuff like that.
