I'd recommend GoldWave from http://www.goldwave.com/ . It's free, small and very good.

RealOne Player is bloated and horribly slow. But at least it's not Winamp 3.

It would probably have been OK to be honest, these things are designed to be fairly idiot-proof - particularly when they're to be used by musicians
