Re:

Perhaps some explanation. The first 3 numbers after your name are your scores (out of 100) in each round. The fourth number is your total over the three rounds. The top 12 speakers went to semi-finals, and 3 speakers from each semi went into the final. And to reiterate Doug, the standard this eyar w...

Re:

Thanks again to those who came on wednesday - another good session, and we saw some good and promising debating from you. The future is looking good for St Andrews this year if you stick at it and work hard. The next session on sunday night is entitled "Presence and Style" and aims to work on your s...

Re:

Thanks to all who came along to the Icebreaker session tonight. The next session (on Wednesday) is entitled "Introduction to British Parliamentary" and is the beginning of the real training programme. We'll be explaining how the format works, and the rules. We will also be trying to get everyone a f...

Re:

To avoid confusion the original post (now edited) was wrong.

It now reads correct as:

Sunday and Wednesday sessions before the Maiden Speakers competition will be dedicated to preparing Freshers for Maidens

See you all on Sunday.

Re:

WHile there's no such thing as an automatic fourth, obvious squirrelling, overtly personally directed insults and/or inappropriate nudity all make it very hard to justify saying any other team is worse...

Re:

The only rule in judging is that there is always scope for a team to do worse. While I would penalise for offering a POI to one's own partner I would be more likely to hammer a couple of speaker points off (and literally only a couple - there are far worse mistakes to be made) than to reflect it in ...

Re:

Only those who have many years experience with debates know how quickly golden legacies can be squandered. LPH as the cornerstone of the society has a lot to live up to this year, and IV success is as much about attracting and retaining talented speakers as training them and getting them out onto th...

Re:

I love it when people comment on something they have little insight into. 1. The Balaka does not sponsor debates. He sponsors the Balaka competition which is run on his behalf by the debating society. That's a very important difference, because not a penny passes from him to the UDS. Thus it has NOT...

Re:

Mr Wilson or Mr Joss can maybe correct me if I am wrong, but in Patterson's year the AP did not sit on the BoT, rather the "UMC Nominee" Tom Jamieson was the Union's representative on the Board. Which did not stop the then AP sitting the AP's chair in LPH, and Mr Jamieson if I remember rightly simpl...

Laura, not taking issue with what you said - that is the one area I said over which the Board could have control and responsibility (and you of course in the position to shape that over the coming year). What I do take issue with is others attacking what was actually SAID by the speakers on the nigh...
