Re: University challenge

Downloads still require you to authenticate against the BBC servers though, so if Freaker is outside the UK (which is my guess, otherwise I don't see why iPlayer couldn't be used), it wouldn't be much use, unfortunately.

Re: Old people are crippling the UK bus network!

I don't know... I remember the quality of the roads leading out of St Andrews. I'm a pretty good driver, used to foul weather and bad country roads here in Indiana, but that road running from St. A's, through Guardbridge and Dairsie and on to Cupar... with how narrow it is, how quickly people drive...

Re: A new user's guide to the Sinner

Re: Finding email addresses

Yep, just log into Webmail, go into the Address Book section, and look up the names in the St Andrews directory.

Re: Purdie building and Irvine Building

If you don't know where the Purdie building is, it's the Chemistry building on the North Haugh, up past maths and computer science. It's pretty big, you can't really miss it. ;)

Re: does the uni network allow VoIP?

Skype is pretty good at getting through firewalls, so it should work.

As for ResTel, it isn't VoIP (possibly Delts is confused by the fact the phones appear to plug into an Ethernet socket, but it is a separate phone line circuit, just with the same kind of connector).

Re: A new user's guide to the Sinner

Old on The Sinner has to mean old enough to remember Prophet Tenebrae or ATBAON If you're really old on The Sinner though, you'll remember Ten's earlier posts, and assorted other characters who are no longer around. ATBAON is perhaps from the middle ages of The Sinner history, really! (Obviously, I...

RedCelt69 wrote:Well that didn't take long. All of my emails have now been migrated to the new system. Cool. Now I can use one email client and can forgo my regular check of the uni website's email page.

For the record, you could do that with the old system, too - I've been doing that for 4 years now. ;)

Re: saintmail

I've signed up, but when I try to sign in at saintmail.st-andrews.ac.uk, I get redirected to https://idp2.st-andrews.ac.uk:8443/idp/Authn/UserPassword, which doesn't seem to be secure, do I don't really want put in my username/password on that site - any ideas? Is the site actually secure, and I'm ...

Re: Computers

I've never ever noticed that at the top of the WineHQ home page. Usually I jump straight into the download or howto sections. There's also CrossOver Mac (including a games-specific variant) which you may find easier to use. It is commercial software (with a trial available), but it's based on Wine ...

Re: Best bank account?

I think the Royal Bank of Scotland can be flexible for non-UK residents. Being a UK resident, I don't know for sure, but I know that a number of overseas friends of mine use them.

Re: Travel tips?

Hmm, £132 for the train, versus £62 with EasyJet (or £100 with British Airways - EasyJet would no doubt charge you extra for all that baggage you want to check in, and the BA flights take only 5 and a half hours). While train travel is something I generally enjoy, and at some point I'd like to trave...

Re: Computers

I would recommend having a look at Apple's site, with the student discount. Excellent laptops - admittedly a bit more expensive, but very reliable. Plus you get a 3-year warranty if you buy it from the student site.

Re: Travel tips?

Does anyone know the best way to get to St Andrews from continental Europe [i]without[i] flying? I've got two big suitcases and not so much money. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! Whereabouts in Europe are you coming from? You could go by train, connect with the EuroStar, and then take NXEC...

Re: Broadband

With a suitably large memory stick, a pigeon would probably be faster than lots of UK-based broadband, too. The issue with that though is the latency rather than the bandwidth. For most people, it'd be quicker to buy a box set of DVDs from Amazon and have them posted out first class than it would be...

Re: Broadband

We used the Office package in our flat last year. Initally we were on Office 45, but found ourselves (a flat of 5, with some heavy downloaders) going over that too often, so went onto Office 90. Certainly more expensive, but with so many of us the cost per person wasn't too significant. With people ...
