What to eat when you have a really sore throat

Postby Nymphomanic on Sun Oct 28, 2007 4:22 pm

I have a really sore throat, which is making it really difficult to talk, breathe and eat, but I know eating's important right now because it'll help fight the cold bug (right?), plus I am craving food, I just went to Tesco but left empty handed because looking at all the food I couldn't decide what to buy, I feel sort of sick as well, but I really want to eat something. Anyone have an ultimate comfort food they go for when they feel really really crap.

If you can bear it - custard is great for sore throats.
I thought I saw your name on a loaf of bread today but when I looked again it said 'Thick Cut'

Not a clue if it's effective or practical but I tend to have ice cream and bread (not at the same time) when I've a sore throat and/or am otherwise ill.

Could be a placebo, or worse...

If it's a cold-type sore throat I think you're meant to avoid dairy.

I eat the same but drink hot water with honey, lemon and whisky if I have.

I'd recommend soluble solpadeine (paracetamol and codeine) - helps soothe your throat long enough to eat something.

As long as you drink as many fluids as possible, I think nutrition can be ignored - chicken soup all the way!

Soup is always good - as flossy suggests, some nice hot chicken soup tends to do me the world of good. Lots of cups of tea, too.

And suck sweets regularly to keep your throat hydrated. Cough sweets are obviously good, but you probably don't want to be on them constantly so any kind of hard sweet will do as an alternative.

If you're really hungry try mash potatoes, maybe with some cheese. Mmmm!

I hadn't heard the dairy thing before. I'm not sure if that includes "probiotic" yoghurt and honey, which should help soothe.

Warmed whisky and honey (perhaps not the lemon juice if it's actually red raw) should at least numb it, if not actually make you feel better. (It's my universal cure and does me pretty well).

Juicy fruit should help you keep your vitamins up. Fresh is better than tinned, but if you're really bad/poor, tinned might go down better.

As usual, take Strepsils, or Soothers or whatever.

...then again, that is only my opinion.

I'll second (or third) Strepsils, great for numbing; also hot water with honey and lemon soothes and keeps you hydrated (v impt).... Ice cream, warm tomato/chicken soup (as mentioned)... ohh smoothies, Galaxy ripples. Not all at once.

Get well soon!

And?

Better than some of your bollocks (eg in Elections thread, students should always be members of the constituency they represent -absent student rep -must be absent?).
