Part time jobs in town

Postby jducey on Thu Mar 04, 2010 3:51 am

Hi-

I'm an incoming international PG student starting an MLitt in September. I'm hoping to find a part time job to earn some extra cash during the year - I was picturing myself working at a pub, restaurant, shop, maybe as a research assistant...something along those lines. Is this a realistic vision, or are there a lot more students than jobs in St. Andrews? Any advice on finding a job before I arrive in St. Andrews? Thanks!

cheers,
jess

The turnover of jobs is fairly high here, and most of them are in the sectors you're looking into-particularly promising are the big hotels (the Fairmont does a ot of casual work but can be tiring) or getting a job in a hall as a server in a dining hall. The only thing that can be problematic is that you're less likely to get a job if you've not got previous experience in that field, and getting part-time hours can be a bit of a slog. As for RA jobs, that depends on your specialism. Do you mind if I ask what your MLitt is in? As an arts student it can be quite hard to get things like teaching assistant jobs as, obviously, there's less research going on; there might be positions in research collectives though! It might be possible for you to tutor classes too, if you're looking for that kind of work. (I'm only a third year undergrad, but having looked for a part time job and a reserach internship in History in the past academic year, you get to know at least a few of the ins and outs!). Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot! I've had my share of crappy jobs in the past, so I have some experience in restaurants, bars, and shops. My MLitt will be in International Security (IR school), but I did my UG degrees in history and psychology and have done research at US government agencies and international NGOs in the past. I've also done a lot of writing and editing for various institution and am a fierce copy editor. I won't be in St. Andrews until August, so do you have any advice on applying for those (research) jobs from abroad? I noticed The Sinner doesn't have a job posting board - is there another online source (like Craigslist or something?) for temp jobs in the area? Thanks!

The careers service has a database of part-time jobs suitable for students. It possibly depends on the time of year. Have a look at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/careers/stu ... standrews/ I presume that also lists things that the job centre have too, but you could also try that: http://jobseekers.direct.gov.uk/

Bars and restaurants sometimes have adverts in their windows if they have jobs available.

You should check if there are restrictions on the hours you can work on your visa.
