Renting a Flat - Switching Utilities

Postby hungariansnake on Fri May 21, 2010 8:08 am

So I've, thankfully, managed to find a flat for next year... but we've got no clue what to do about switching over utilities etc. How do we transfer to a new Broadband/phone supplier, in our name? What do we need to do about gas, electricity etc. All pretty trivial stuff, I'm sure, but as it's the first time in rented accommodation for all of us, we're clueless.

Ask your new landlord if there's anything already under contract (phone/broadband/etc.) It's easiest to simply start a new account with all of the companies, as the previous resident likely took their account with them. Contact British Gas (or whoever you want to use) and let them know you want to start an account for gas and electricity. Tell them the date of your move in and that date is when you want to start service. As for phone and broadband, do a little price/service comparison and start an account with the company as well.
