French car in Scotland

Postby adlh on Thu Sep 01, 2011 9:47 pm

Hi everybody,

I have a question related to a foreign car. Do you know if an old car (1994) is permitted to travel and stay in the UK? What are the requirements? Will the UK insurance be more expensive?
Is it expensive to buy a second-hand car in Scotland?
thanks for your advice!!!

Hi,

A bit late but anyway.
It's not a problem to have a older foreign car in Scotland. I was driving a left-hand drive for just over a year and never had any problems. I'm not sure about insurance because I continued to have my German insurance while I was here. Second-hand cars are quite cheap in Scotland. I picked up a good 2001 Ford Focus estate for £1000, and insurance and tax is also slightly cheaper than in Germany, though I'm not sure about France. Have a look here for price comparisons: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/car-insurance/
