Advice on working in Senegal!

Postby megan on Thu Feb 16, 2012 4:19 pm

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone is from Senegal, or has worked there before? I've been offered an internship with a small NGO there for the summer and want to accept the job, but I want to find out a bit more about the organisation first. It's really small so there isn't a lot online. I have previous experience of NGOs so I'm aware that things don't always run smoothly, but I have no experience of working in the African continent so I don't know how to go about getting more information. I wouldn't be as concerned if it was an area I was more familiar with, because I know I'd be able to get another job once I was out there if things didn't work out. I've contacted the Embassy for Senegal in the UK but as of yet they haven't been much help. The organisation is called Cause Premiere.

Thanks in advance,

Megan

Why not try contact the FCO (Foreign Office), they should be able to give some advice on the situation in the area that you'll be going to. Just pester the NGO that you're working for though. They are responsible for you and if they aren't answering your questions I would have reservations about going on the trip.
If you do physics, panic.

Thanks for your opinion. I already looked at the country profile on the FCO and things seem relatively ok atm, but I might get in touch with them personally next week, as well as the UK embassy in Senegal. The NGO is answering my questions, I just wanted an independent opinion of them, ie something that they haven't written themselves. Just for a bit of resssurance, as I've never been to the area before. Cheers.
