I'm studying philosophy here as part of my joint hons course and I have to say it's fab!
The tutors/lecturers/professors are easy going as in easy to talk to, you can have a laugh with them, they're all approachable and quite clearly are passionate about what they know - but they're not averse to learning about something outside of their area of interest.
Most of them are open to new ideas and don't expect you to agree with what they believe or their take on certain theories.
I don't know what part of philosophy you want to specialise in but if you have a particular interest in Moral/Political Philosophy (Utilitarian/Consequentialism) then you are better off at St Andrews now that we have Professor Tim Mulgan. He has been a bit of a catch for this uni and is top class in his field. Additionally, if you like your logic and metaphysics then you have fab lecturers in Patrick Greenough (he should be knighted in my opinion) and Peter Clarke. If you like your philosophy of religion then we have John Haldane who is also top class in his field.
More importantly, all of them appear to know how to pitch their lectures just right so you're not totally confused or uninterested.
Having a small department is also a bonus because it means everyone gets to know each other better and it makes for interesting debates in the seminars.
Oh and I understand that the St Andrews Philosophy department got a 5 rating in the RAE so we are a good place to be should you be considering doing a Philosophy Postgrad course.
There's my 2 pence worth......
