hi everyone,
I deffered my entry till next year but now im thinking of applying to edinburgh uni to study philosophy as i have heard that they have a really good philosophy department and that out of every 15 peole that apply 4 philosophy, only 1 person gets through. If anyone is doing philosophy, could you please give me some feedback as to how good it is?
thanks

Well, I HAVE a Philosophy degree from St Andrews and can honestly say that it was a great place to study with great staff, quality courses. My advice would be to go and have another look around and chat to people who are working/studying there. The postgrads were always a good source of information when I was there!

I'm studying philosophy here as part of my joint hons course and I have to say it's fab!

The tutors/lecturers/professors are easy going as in easy to talk to, you can have a laugh with them, they're all approachable and quite clearly are passionate about what they know - but they're not averse to learning about something outside of their area of interest.

Most of them are open to new ideas and don't expect you to agree with what they believe or their take on certain theories.

I don't know what part of philosophy you want to specialise in but if you have a particular interest in Moral/Political Philosophy (Utilitarian/Consequentialism) then you are better off at St Andrews now that we have Professor Tim Mulgan. He has been a bit of a catch for this uni and is top class in his field. Additionally, if you like your logic and metaphysics then you have fab lecturers in Patrick Greenough (he should be knighted in my opinion) and Peter Clarke. If you like your philosophy of religion then we have John Haldane who is also top class in his field.

More importantly, all of them appear to know how to pitch their lectures just right so you're not totally confused or uninterested.

Having a small department is also a bonus because it means everyone gets to know each other better and it makes for interesting debates in the seminars.

Oh and I understand that the St Andrews Philosophy department got a 5 rating in the RAE so we are a good place to be should you be considering doing a Philosophy Postgrad course.

There's my 2 pence worth...... :)

Hey, i'm currently in first year at edinburgh university. My major is Japanese, but i'm taking Philosophy as an outside subject. Philosophy is certainly a very popular course as Edinburgh, but there is no problem getting on the course as the classes are held in what i think is, the largest lecture theater on campus. There's loads of different lecturers from the UK and the US, and even more tutorial staff. I couldn't tell you if it's better than the St Andrews course, but it probably is... ;)
