BOP on Fridays and Saturdays sucks!

Postby sss on Wed Oct 19, 2005 3:38 pm

The bop on Fridays and Saturdays sucks! - music is just terrible (mostly for oldies...) and you should wait for 35-50 min to listen to the music you ordered. It just can't be worse than that.

How come we don't have a single decent disco club in St Andrews?

Any comments? suggestions? short speeches?

So the DJ should drop every single request he's gotten in the last 35-50 minutes and play YOUR request?

And the DJs change every week- you get some bad ones and some good ones

Sounds like someone didn't drink enough before going to the Bop fatal error, but hardly the Union's fault as it is a very good supplier of cheap alcohol and doesn't get arsey about ID, see Offy thread.

I was wasted on Friday and had a great time at the Bop.

The union is very concerned about ID, and will not serve anyone who appears to be under age.

Anyone under 18, who is caught drinking alcohol in the union will be subjected to a 6month ban, or until they are 18 (whichever is longer).

Excuse me just one moment, "students association", was I suggesting underage drinking I don't think I was. I was actually trying to stand up for the good work done by the Students' Association, re: the bop. I was merely saying that people like me who are OBVIOUSLY over 18, can get served without the rigmarole of producing a passport like in Bottoms Up. The Students Association, obviously IDs everyone on the door, but they don't get arsey about matric cards like some of the people at BU.

I beg your pardon - thought you meant that anyone could get served at Offsales (obviously not the case).

Actually I suppose my post was rather ambigious. No hard feelings.

I would have thought that they could build one club in this place, there are 7000 students for crying out loud.

Just a small one!

Any fool can see that, but how on earth do u think anyone would get planning permission for a club! the locals are trying to get rid of the 2am licence at the union on weekends! they would rather drop dead than see a club built in St Andrews, they were arsey enuf about starbucks for christsakes!

I think that the real issue is money.

A decent club would have a minimum build cost of around £1.5M. It would need to be refurbished every two to three years at a cost of around £350,000.

It would probably only be busy one and a half nights a week, with a capacity of around 1,500. Students are only here for 22 weeks a year.

Calculate how much gross profit (income minus cost of sales and wages) it would need to take just to cover the investment.

Thanks for your comments, I think you would find any club that you go to will take your request and will only play it until the find a suitable place in their set. With the amount of requests we get we can't just Drop everything for your one request. And Since when have Saturday Bops been on, there was one on a saturday after freshers week but apart from that there has been none since.

If you have any suggestions on how to make YOUR union better then get in contact with Director of Ents and Services who I am sure will be happy to meet you.

There's always some pedantic twit who has to take things too far on these threads.

Did you not read what was put there? ''doent get arsey'' does not mean ''unconcerned''.

Look it up in your dictionary, where (if you use the same as I) you should find this:

" 2. Chiefly Brit. Bad-tempered, uncooperative. Also: having an exaggerated opinion of one's own importance; arrogant, pretentious."

Still... bop sucks :-( No decent music... Always something for oldiest or music from 70s...

Give me a break! This is a DISCO, not an old-fashion bar where people are used to listen to this crap...

Best,
GT

Cheesey yes - but all this talk of 70's disco music bemuses me.

Most nights I've been to the Bop, chart singles and the most recognised 'hits' from the last 10 years seems to make up the majority of the playlist.

Fair enough, they do bang in the odd YMCA etc but it's hardly Saturday Night Fever St.Andrews stylee.

For where we are, and what I know of other student venues (clubs & unions)around the country - I think the Union has done pretty well.

All hail to the DJ.

I go to the Bop quite regularly and I have to admit I'm quite pleased with it these days, however, there is still room for improvement.

My suggestions are;

1. Cut the crap! Chesney Hawks more than once a semester should be outlawed, people have been executed for less. This applies to other cheesy crap.

And before anyone jumps on the whole, "but he played here and it went down very well" story, try to think of the people who didn't go, and also our new 1st years, who must be thinking "What the f**k!!" every time they have to listen to that song.

2. I do agree that the variety of songs has vastly improved, but the order of the songs and genre is very much the same week to week, so it would be nice to jumble the order week to week.

For example, the songs which get everyone going, such as the "sexy" numbers from Britney, Beyonce, you know the type, are normally played half way through the evening, but at this point everyone's grinding and thinking their in with a chance, but by the end of the night when we're listening to "I predict a riot" this feeling has gone and no one cops off. It's a shame, let people leave on a buzz, not still pogo-ing about to the Proclaimers.

3. Funk, need I say more? There's always room for a little funk in our lives.

I'm not criticizing the good work of the DJ's, I understand that it is a difficult job to please everyone's musical tastes, but people are allowed to make suggestions since it is our union.

There are three stages of drunkenness
1) Drunk
2) Paralytic
3) Able to tolerate the BOP

What pissed me off last year was the fact that the music played by the DJ in the main bar was soooo much better than anything played in the BOP. He had the right tempo, it made people feel cheery and up for a quality night. The fact you have to be absolutely radished off your face to even go in the Bop sums it all up.

As for going to Dundee on a friday and saturday night I wouldn't recommend it. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are far better for a good club night out.

And the argument that St.Andrews is a small university town that would only get business for 1 and a half nights a week, 22 weeks a year?

1) I think you underestimate the partying spirit amongst Uni students, which would undoubtedly go up if there was a club.

2) Coalville in Leicestershire is a small remote town with no university, yet it is now one of the biggest club nights out in England with DJs like Tiesto and Paul van Dyk performing. I think we could just about match that
