gowns

If memory serves me right, many years ago, the union used to buy gowns from departing students and resell them to new students, making a tidy profit on the difference.

Do they still do this? If so , what is the going rate for a gown?

Yes we do - you can earn up to £40 for a good quality gown. Make sure your gown doesn't have any holes in it, as this could be an indication of moth damage.
