The Saint-Crystal Comment-Big Ben

Postby Fifer on Fri Oct 11, 2002 8:08 am

Oh Dear I assume the writer of the article is not British.
The name Big Ben refers not to the Clock Tower itself, but to the thirteen ton bell hung within. The bell was named after the first Commissioner of Works, Sir Benjamin Hall. the bell originally came from the old Palace of Westminster and was given to the Dean of St Pauls by William the Third.
The Tower is not open to the public, but those with"special interests" may arrange a visit to yhe top of the Clock Tower through their local[UK] MP.
